Many people always want to start modelling/skinning but they think they cant because modelling and skinning software costs too much! Modelling softwares such as 3dsmax, Maya and Lightwave are very expensive for people that just model for fun, the same happens with skinners and Photoshop.
But you dont need to buy those softwares to be an expert. You can be a real expert with only free softwares! Ill make a list of the best free softwares for modelling and skinning:
MODELLING:
Blender
Blender is simply amazing, you can make amazing models with it, and its very easy to use,
one thing that usually happens is that people dont like its interface, but after a week of practice you will love Blenderīs interface, I had that problem, but now I love the interface of Blender. Blender also has an incredible feature: Sculpting. You can create the shape of your model by simply drawing on it, grabing parts of it and etc. There is no doubt that Blender is the best freeware modelling software.
GMAX
Gmax is just like 3ds Max but the limited version, it has no renderer, but thats not a big problem. It also lacks of some modifiers and some other features such as hair and fur, but thats not a problem if you have Blender. Im using this to make weapons, and I really love it.
CB Model Pro
CB Model Pro was built around the idea that surfaces should be manipulated directly. The result is a very intuitive and highly productive tool for 3D content creation that seamlessly fits into the production pipeline, you can create complex models in just minutes! I also use this one.
Metasequoia
Metasequoia is a polygon modeler for 3DCG and game development. It provides you efficient modeling works. It is very easy to use and learn. Even a beginner will be able to manage it in one day.
Its very similar to Milkshape 3d, but faster, and with some more useful tools. Do you know RedRogueXIII? Well, guess which modelling software he uses? Yes, Metasequoia.
RENDERER: Pov-Ray
The Pov-Ray is a high-quality, totally free tool for creating stunning three-dimensional graphics. I use it as my personal renderer.
SKINNING:
GIMP
GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.
GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
It has many features that photoshop has, and here in FPSB, you can read alot of tutorials for Gimp.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see, you dont need to use those expensive tools to model/skin, you can use this free tools and make amazing skins/models, so if you want to start making some good stuff, download those tools Ive listed. Note that if you download 3ds Max, it uses 700 MB of disk space, but if you download all of the softwares I listed, all together they use between 100 MB and 200 MB of disk space.
I hope this tutorial helped you. Thanks for reading!
