CSA: An In-Depth Look
Difficulty: Beginner
Category: FPSB > Other/MiscAuthor(s): $carface, tom

Tom has recently introduced CSA version 5. As of now, it's only fully implemented in the maps and skins sections. This version allows for more specific rating, but it a tad bit more confusing. Here, I will explain how to use it and define some vocabulary used when speaking of CSA.

Starting off, you might want to know what CSA is. It stands for Community Submission Assessment. Here at FPSB, we use it to rate other members submissions. When used correctly, the submitter can get great feedback on how to make his future submissions better. Now that the explanation is over, we can get to new stuff.

Sliders

If you remember v4, you will remember the drop down menu and only 8 possible ratings. With v5,there is a slider and different areas you can rate the submission in. Let's say that you're rating a skin, and it has a nice skin, but the model sucks. You can rate the skin a 9, but the model a 6.5. You're rating would average out to a 7.75. You can choose as the submitter what you want to be rated on.

Exemplariness

So let's say you give some real good feedback, and you feel that your post is a bit better than others, you want to be noticed, right? Well, with CSA v5, you are. Any moderator or admin of that section can choose to make your post Exemplary. You can see EF (Exemplary Feedback) by a green check by a post.

You also gain points. Exemplary feedback is separated from other feedback by making that assessment a critic assessment. That's explained next.

Here are some examples of EF:

Pros: Ahhh it's original Idea I'll tell you that.

Cons: The glass is frosty... Very hard to see through it so it gives you a disadvantage. The wording on the glass is extremely blurry and low quality. Also there's a website plastered on top of it so this could either be seen as personalized or plain ol' advertising.

Improvements: Don't plaster a website onto the window... It's just foolish. Make it slightly more transparent and try to make everything sharpen and or of higher quality.

Well, it was a good idea, but it could have been implemented a bit better. Let's start with the actual model. As mentioned by others, the smoothing error son the blade of the cleaver (near the hole) really take away from the quality of this release, making it seem like a bit more time could have been put aside for fine tuning the model so it looks perfect. The textures are a good start, but really lack the detail necessary to give the blade sheen and texture it requires. For the blade, I recommend working more on a brushed or reflective metal look, rather than the quasi-gradient that appears to have been used. For the handle, I recommend a bump or normal made with more minute details, such as the screws that are supposedly going through the handle. It will really bring out the quality. For the world model, I should request maybe more of an upright position and a lightly larger model.

Overall a good start.

I loled at the fact they now have a target on their forehead, but seriously now, let's get down to the main details of this skin. Only really a few issues that I found throughout the skins, and these could be easily fixed if you know what you're doing.

If you look closely on the red spy, something definitely seems amiss with the tie. It goes from a nice violet to an overly bright portion. It would would look much better as one colour.

The suits themselves are good, but in the first person view, the sleeves look much too smooth. You need to get some texture to those, man. Try getting a light fibrey look or use normals to emphasize the pinstripes on the suit more, making them really stand out like the should. Just you need something to break up the smoothness.

Balaclavas are good, but they have the same issue. They need more texture to them. I mean, when was the last time you saw a leather balaclava, right? As another small detail, getting some texture on the gloves would be beneficial, though it should definitely be something like leather for those.

Critics

Critics are members you show an extreme amount of knowledge and contsructive feedback in all their posts. Their feedback is separated from other posts, along with other posts that are exemplary. You can become a critic by consistently posting EF. There is no correlation between the amount of EF you have and being a critic. When a moderator feels that you deserve becoming a critic, you will be promoted.

VWAR

VWAR stands for Volume Weighted Average Rating. It's tom's brand spankin' new way of calculating a submission's average rating. It takes into effect the total amount of assessments as well as their ratings. Tom explains it quite well here.

a = Assessments Aggregate
The sum of all assessments made on the submission. If a submission has two 10/10s and three 8/10s, then the aggregate is 10+10+8+8+8 = 44.

b = Number of Assessments
The number of assessments the submission has received.

c = Category's Average Number of Assessments
The submission's category's average number of assessments per submission. For popular categories, this will be higher, and for less popular games it will be smaller. This variable ensures less popular games are not penalized.

It's a bit confusing looking at it. But if you know any algebra, it should be simple enough. After some studying, you should be able to break it down. It helps to make sure that ratings are weighted and that less popular ratings are not left out in the dust.

This brings this tutorial to it's conclusion. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me via PM or just post here. I hope this helps a few people out. Get to assessing!

Good tutorial, wheres the rest of the assessments :(

anyways, only thing I can think of to improve would be a general guideline on how to structure your post in relation to each criteria you've rated.

Ie, rate the gameplay 7/10. Post about what you like and didn't like for that, leave a space, rate the design a 9/10, post what you love about the maps design and so on. Rather than rate each section and post "I really love this map, very nice job keep it up!"

Also, VWAR Bye bye :P
