This tutorial was put together by Raidenator and shows how to make flares the player can pick up.

Open or make a new map and make a large 18 sided cylinder. Make it at least 512 x 512 x height doesn't matter. If you make the x and y dimensions small, it will look sharp and not have all 18 faces.


Shrink your large cylinder down to a 2x2x4 cylinder. (Select it then drag the centre handles) As you can see it has all 18 faces and is very small. Make it a func_physbox and give it a name - body.


Texture it whatever you want. I find metal hull textures work best.

Place an env_flare on top of your physbox. The "x" in the middle of the env_flare entity should be right at the top of the physbox.

Name the env_flare flare. Parent it to the physbox. In the Flags tab, check the flag start off.


Select your func_physboxopen the Properties Click on Outputs and Add. Enter the following:

When the player picks up the physbox, the flare will start burning and burn for 30 seconds.


You can make this into a prefab.


Select the env_flare and the func_physbox then click on Create Prefab. Name it whatever you want. It will be available to you to place in a map at any time. If you want more than one flare though, you will have to give different names to the two entities.

U know your able to use the flare model, it starts out clean and on use the model changes to the burned out one so it looks used
