The Core from Ep1 - by Maloof? Difficulty: Intermediate
Category: HL2 > Mapping Author(s): maloof
This tutorial assumes some knowledge of Hammer - and that you know the basics of the Input/Output system. You must be using the Episode 1 configuration of Hammer.
Step 1 - Placement
I find it easier to place the Core before building the map. This may seem strange, but in reality it's a lot easier to build around something than have to shift an entire map halfway across the grid, which could result in off-grid vertices. The Core must be placed at a specific point on the Hammer grid. The further the Core is from this point the more distorted the texture gets.
First, we zoom in two of our 2D views. It doesn't matter which two. Zoom them in as close as they will go. Secondly, go
View | Go to Coordinates .
Type in the coordinates 2687 12142 5161
Click in the center of the two zoomed-in 2D views, and place a Prop_coreball here. A few units away from these exact co-ordinates is fine.
Open the Properties
Name Core
Step 2 - Basic Pulsing
In Episode 1, the Core pulsed randomly, with different sized pulses each time. We will cover a more simple way to animate the Core.
Create a logic_timer. Open the Properties
Use Random Time Yes
Minimum and Maximum intervals whatever you fancy. I recommend AT LEAST 1 second for the Minimum Interval .
Open the Outputs tab for the Logic_timer . Set it up to look like this -
Note that at 0 seconds the Core will set its' overall scale to 1.4 , passing through 1.2 on the way. The engine seems to read the series of Parameters from right to left.
At 0.5 seconds after the timer goes off, the Core returns to its' original size. I haven't experimented with more than 3 consecutive parameters in a single output entry. If this is possible, some unique Core pulses would be easy to create.
Step 3 - Containment
If we leave the prop_coreball and logic_timer out in the void, nothing will work.
Build a room around it ( be careful - the Core co-ordinates place it very close to the edge of the grid! ) and place an info_ player_start and light in the room.
Compile the map, and see your Core in all its' radioactive glory!
(More Core-related tutorials to come, including completely random pulse sizes and times, advanced Core effects, etc.)
