A better way to record movies Difficulty: Intermediate |

Alright, in this tutorial we aim to teach you a method of recording for your Source games that give you the utmost in quality. Many of you have used Fraps, and you'll notice that the videos make look like crap! Very bad indeed! The biggest thing you'll notice is that video you just recorded has also recorded the lag! Oh dear. The only problem is that you will not be able to record multiplayer this way, at least not to my knowledge, but it should be perfect for G-Mod movies that you're doing by yourself.
Well, using this method that I'm about to teach you, every video you make will show absolutely zero lag and record each graphic detail you had in-game almost perfectly.
Are you ready to get started?
Good.
I.Things you will need
- A source game
- A program called VirtualDub (more on that below, including a download link)
- A decent computer, although I've used this method on computers just fine with integrated Vid Chips, it always helps to have a decent computer
- A basic understanding of Source, it's commands, and where you can find all the proper folders
- A pulse, brain matter, and some common sense
II. Getting Setup
Ok, now, the biggest key to getting this to work is using and understanding a program called VitualDub. This is a program that allows you to create AVI files (Audio Video Interleave). Using this program, we're going to "process" our "Raw" movies that we took in Source and make them into AVIs.
First, you need to download it. There are several versions there, select the one that works for you best, they should all work and function in the same manner with very little variance, and setting them up is simple as un-zipping the download and clicking on the ".exe". We're not going to get much into it as there are only two basic commands that you'll need to know when using the program.
III.The Meat and Potatoes
You may want to print this tutorial out. or write these next two commands down, as they are what's going to record your movies.
1. Get in game
2. Set up your scene, making sure that you get everything down that you need perfect
3. Open the console
4. Type startmovie "moviename" raw
5. Exit the console
Immediately you will notice a serious lag in performance, many of you will shit bricks, and others will be questioning if the new nVida 9 series is adequate. This is normal. It's also the reason why planning ahead is critical. Some people may not experience that much of a problem at all, but users bewarned, it can happen. 6.When you are done recording, enter the console and put in endmovie
Note: These high quality pics suck up HDD space like a whore.
There! You have just recorded your movie clip!
IV.Processing
Cool, you made it, you've survived it so far. That's great! Now comes the hard part. First, turn on Vdub.
Remember when you thought you and your computer had both shit bricks? Well that's for a good reason. Using this method, the source engine takes a shitload of high quality pictures, and dumps them in your Gmod folder along with a .wav format audio file. They all should be named the name you gave to your clip, just with a numerical designation to figure which came first. I find it very easy to move these out of the Gmod folder and into a "processing" folder I keep on my desktop. Be careful when you move these files, you need to select them all. They should showup with an unrecognized format icon, but don't worry, Vdub will read them. After you have selected the first one, hold down shift and simply click the last one. Depending on the length of the movie, you may have to hunt a little way. Always make sure you select the first file first.
Take your selected files, and simply drag them, by the first file, onto the Vdub workspace. An image of your movie should showup. Now, go Audio>WAV audio. Find and select the .wav file that went with your movie. This automatically procceses the audio of you movie along with the video. Next, go File>Save as AVI. After doing this, it should start chugging through all those files the Source engine made are being put together into a seamless high quality motion picture with sound.
When it is done, on your desktop there will be a video file with the name of your clip, all shiny and ready to be edited, processed and worked with for your movie.
