Basic Clipping Tutorial

Welcome to another one of my mapping tutorials. In this tutorial, I will be teaching you how to use the Clipping tool. The Clipping Tool is a very useful tool when you know how to use it. It is the tool that should be used instead of carving.

Lets Get Started!

The Basics of the Clipping Tool

I'll be showing you various things that can be done with the tool starting off with the basics.

  1. Start off by starting a new map in Hammer, and create a simple brush. It doesn't matter how large it is.

  2. Now, select the Clipping Tool from the toolbar on the left, or press Shift+X

  3. To use this tool, make sure you have the brush you want to clip selected, and just click on the brush in one of the 2D views. Once you do so, you should have something like this:

  4. You can continue to move the selection by clicking the white dots, and just dragging them.

  5. To clip the brush, press the Enter or the Return key on your keyboard. The part that will be clipped, is the part that is not within the white selection.

  6. You can also change around the selection by pressing Shift+X again.

If you press it once, the selection will invert

And if you press it again, the entire brush will be selected. This allows you to simply cut the brush and keep both halves if it

  7. Once you press ENTER, it should look like this:

  8. You'll now be able to select each of the brushes individually and move them.

Now that we have the basics of using this tool down, lets try something a little more complicated. We're going to be creating a simple hole for a window.

Creating a simple Hole in a Wall

  1. Start off by just creating a brush in your map, I created a brush the same size as before, but once again - it doesn't matter that the size is.

  2. Go ahead an select the Clipping Tool Shift+X and make a selection on the brush. If your entire brush isn't selected, press Shift+X until it is.

  3. Press Enter to cut the brush, and continue cutting it 3 more times.

  4. Then cut it again on the top

Then finally cut on the bottom. It should look something like this:

Now, all you have to do is delete the center brush, and you should now have a hole.

There are some unnecessary brushes being used, which should be deleted. So go ahead and delete the 4 corner brushes, and just make the center brushes larger.

Creating a doorway is basically the same process, you'll just have to delete an extra brush.

That's basically all there is for the basics of the clipping tool. There's much more that this tool can be used for, so be creative.

Note: Be careful when using this tool. If you clip a single brush multiple times, make sure to tie it to func_detail and make sure to watch out for microbrushes which are brushes smaller than 1 unit.

Thank you for reading my tutorial, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to PM me or leave a comment.

Actually, in cases such as to having a hole in a wall and only a hole (no insertion of props inside it or brushes), i think its better to carve when u have a small brush you want the hole in, if are to clip it, you get 4 outer brushes, while carving has one brush with an un-rendered point inside it ---just my thought instead of having to use this tool at all, as i do not and my map runs fine with 32 carves into 16 lined pillars =3 (192 fps, props and everything)

Very nice tut, I just have 1 question, I've gotten micro-brushes before, but I don't know how it happened, in what case would you find this type of brush?
