A bunch of people have asked me about this so I decided to make a tutorial.
This tutorial may seem long but no matter which tutorial you read the process is still the same, and hopefully this tutorial explains the process thoroughly enough for those that aren't as computer savvy.
Things you will need are:
-Artistic Mind
-Adobe Photoshop, which you can download free (just a trial though unless you pay), or any program that can save files as type targa or .tga
-Source SDK, which you can download by opening your steam window and clicking on the 4th tab called Tools and just double click it to download it.
-You could also use GIMP 2 which is free.
-and this tutorial
First, you should go into this folder -> C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\account name
Then click sourcesdk-content -> cstrike -> materialsrc ->VGUI -> Logos
If you don't have these folders then make them (you should have them...)
The next step is to make a BATCH file. If you do not know what that is just don't worry about it and do exactly what I say. Right click and create a new text document. Then copy and paste this:
@echo off
"%sourcesdk%\bin\vtex" -mkdir %1
Ok, now click save as, and save it as Vtex.bat . Its very important that the file type is .bat because that is what makes it "work".
Theres a few stipulations to making one of these, the end result will be another file that has to be LESS than 120Kb. So, when you are making the pictures that will be in your animated spray, they have to be a certain size and there can only be a few images in it. You can't control the speed they play at (as far as I know), and no matter what size they are, they will be resized when you spray them in source. Ok. The images have to be in the dimensions that have a common denominator of 2. So they can only be like 8 x 8 pixels or 256 x 256 pixels.
A little warning though, the smaller the size, the more pixellated or blurry the end result will be, but then again, if the size is any larger than 128 x128 you will only be able to have like 2 different images. So that is why I think 128 x 128 pixels is the best.
********************************************
In photoshop, when you save your file it will ask you what resolution you want to save at (bits/pixel). I haven't played around with this much but what I've found is that at 128 x128, by choosing 32 bits/pixel, you can fit 6 frames.
By choosing 24 bits/pixel you can fit 7 frames. So you get some idea of how many images you can plan to have in your spray
Also in that same box you will have to uncheck the box that says RLE Compression.
********************************************
Basically if you were to run photoshop, just make sure that every picture you save is 128 x 128 or whatever dimension you want it. When you are saving your picture, save to this folder:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\micheal_hunt\sourcesdk_content\cstrike\materialsrc\VGUI\Logos
and save as type .tga. Also, your picture has to be numbered using 001. So basically if I wanted my finished product to be called Mike, I would save my pictures as Mike001.tga, Mike002.tga...etc. They have to be saved as type tga, not jpg or bmp or anything.
Ok, once you have all of the pictures made that you want to be in your spray, and numbered in order of which you want to go first to last the way I explained, in the folder I told you, and you have Source SDK RUNNING WHILE YOU DO THIS ----- you need to make ANOTHER new text document in the Logos folder again.
For this one just copy and paste this:
"startframe" "1"
"endframe" "x"
VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU REPLACE X WITH THE NUMBER OF FRAMES YOU HAVE. So if I have 5 pictures that I want to be in my spray, I would paste
"startframe" "1"
"endframe" "5"
Now save this document as the same name as your pictures except without the numbers. So I would save it as Mike.txt
Next you have to click on your recently made text document and drag it over top of the BATCH file we made earlier and a little dos screen should pop up and you dont have to read what it says because you probably wont understand it. it should say hit any key to continue or something like that and for me It takes a little while to close.
TAH DA!!! Your file is made... but where is it??!? Back out to this folder
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\micheal_hunt
and go to your regular counterstrike folder and find the VGUI folder there and click logos
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\account name\counter-strike source\cstrike\materials\VGUI\logos
now I dont know what other files you have in there, but there should be 2 new files. Both are the name of your new file but one is of type .vmt and one is .vtf. vmt stands for valve map texture and vtf stands for valve texture file and the one of type vtf is the one you want. If it is not there then you did something wrong and should go through my steps to find out where you messed up. If it is larger than 120kb then it wont work and you either have to use smaller pictures or fewer pictures.
To load it into CS you just have to open CS and go to options, then where your current spray is, you click Browse and locate this folder again:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\micheal_hunt\counter-strike source\cstrike\materials\VGUI\logos
and it should be in there and your all set! Its a long process but once you do it the first time it becomes second nature. I've made many so far and it just gets easier and easier, assuming you have some sort of "imagination". GL all and enjoy!

Update:
I recently reformatted my computer with Windows XP Pro x64 and since then I haven't been able to use this method to make sprays. I can't figure out what the problem is, and it could be the operating system itself (anyone verify?). ANYWAY, theres an easier way to do this anyway. Download this tool called SprayR from here: http://www.fpsbanana.com/tools/492
Now make all of the frames the way the tutorial says, and when you open SprayR, click "Add", and then browse to find all your frames. Then there is a little box to check that lets you make them into an animated spray. The same rules apply (file size must be 120kb or less). Then just click create. |
