I've used this method for a long time, but instead I use an adjustment layer, making highlights white/yellow, midtones yellow/orange and shadows orange/red. Either way has a great outcome, I just thought I'd let you know so you can try it out yourself, you'd probably get a better result than I do because I don't take a lot of time getting the right colors.

I can't manage to do this.. I tried with the smudge tool and stuff but it doesn't look anything like your smudging :/
