Download and install Steam. Once the download has finished, double-click on the Steam Install executable file. Review the Subscriber Agreement and select "I Agree." Select your age group and click "Next." Select your connection speed and click "Next." Leave the installation path as-is and click on "Next." You are now ready to install, click on "Next." Wait for the Installation to finish. Now, after the installation, steam will launch - make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Step 2.
Get Ready. Now, you will be asked whether you would like to create a new account or log on to an existing one. Click on "Create New Account" and follow the instructions. Make sure you use a valid and trusted email address when creating an account. When you are done creating an account and steam is done updating - fire up Counter-Strike and adjust the graphical settings to your liking. Leave everything else just like it is - we will do the rest of the options in a config. Exit Counter-Strike but leave steam running - it will probably be doing a lot of updating, since a lot of updates have been released. Don't disconnect just yet - move on to the next step.
Step 3.
Configure CS. To play like a pro, you'll need to have an edge over your opponent(s). Great players use custom configuration files! But creating a good config file can be really tiresome - so I've gone to the liberty of creating a config template, so you can just edit it. A config file is a simple text document that saves all your game settings and key bindings. Download my free config template and copy it to your "...\cstrike" folder. Click on "Yes" if it prompts you, asking whether you want to replace the old file or not. You should now have a brand new "userconfig.cfg" file. Next, fire up Notepad. Click and drag your "userconfig.cfg" into Notepad to start editing it. The file should be pretty self explanatory, note that everything behind // are just comments and the game ignores these. When you are done configuring, save the file and exit Notepad.
Note: Be sure to read the next step before you bind any keys.
Step 4.
Bind. The keys you use when playing Counter-Strike can greatly affect how good or bad you play. Though many people prefer many different ways of playing - the way I will show you, in my experience, works best. The arrow keys are out! I myself have played using the arrow keys a good long time, but once I tried other key bindings - I realised that the arrow keys just don't cut it anymore. In Counter-Strike, as with most competitive games, it is best to bind a key for every weapon and item. This sounds very intimidating at first, but at the end of the day you will be so comfortable playing this way - you'll never look back. If you would like to try my key configuration, please download this second config template and use it instead of the one you downloaded earlier. I highly recommend you use my key configuration! It will also make your life a whole lot easier when you use the tactics in Step 8. Practise these new keys - they might seem silly at first and your fingers will have trouble finding the right key - but after a while you'll get the hang of it! Remember, practice makes perfect.
Note: Please set your notepad font to Arial, Regular, Size: 10. Otherwise the file will not display correctly.
Step 5.
MIC & You. Getting your MIC to work can be real tiresome sometimes - so here you go, a guide to setting up your MIC for CS. First download and save Voice Tweak (right click and save as) somewhere you'll be able to find it easily. Then double-click on "voice_tweak.exe" Now, click on "System Setup" and follow the instructions. Now, tick next to "Enable +20dB..." and increase the volume slider - speak into the MIC and make sure you can hear yourself clearly. Also make sure that you activate voice communication at the in-game options menu. Oh, and bind a key to voice communication - when you press and hold this key other team members will be able to hear you speak (online). Hint - don't Spam like a noob, use the voice communication when necessary only. Good Luck!
Step 6.
Strategise. Strategy is the key to being a successful CS player...
