Using HLSS
Difficulty: Beginner

HLSS stands for Half-Life Sound Selector. You may have seen people in servers (such as the Battle Island) playing more than one song. Now is your chance to be an e-DJ and play your songs!

1) Download HLSS
Without this step you wouldn't be able to use your songs so get on going and start downloading

2) Setting HLSS up
After you've downloaded HLSS unpack the folder in Program Files or any where that is easy to access. Now you've done that open up the HLSS.exe file and it will most likely give you this error. Press okay and let's head on to the next step!

3) Finding CSTRIKE
For an easier understanding view Screenshot A, but I will still explain it. When your HLSS is open, go to File > Options. Do not click on Auto-Find as it takes a minute or two and usually screws up. Click on Browse and find your game directory (For Steam it will be under C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\your@email.com\Counter-Strike\cstrike).

4) Converting the Music
This is a fairly easy step but you have to pay attention so you do not confuse the numbers. This is what you have to configure in order for it to work (Also check Screenshot B for a better look):

  • Frequency: 8000
  • Bits: 16
  • Channels: Mono

For a more indepth look into converting files, check out my other tutorial for Manual Music play.

5) Adding sound files:
You should now be done converting your music. Now click on the plus sign and browse for your sound (Refer to Screenshot C). Now find a song by clicking on the . As you can see choose a shortcut (Bind) which will not affect your gameplay in CS (Such as Num 2,3,4,5, etc). Don't worry we're almost finished!

6) Playing songs in CS
When you have all of your music ready you need to do a VERY important step. Drag the autoexec.cfg into your cstrike folder. Now if you have something else in your autoexec.cfg copy the scripts from below and paste it into your original autoexec.cfg.

    bind "[" "+PlayWAV"
    bind "]" "ToggleWAV"
    alias +PlayWAV "voice_inputfromfile 1; voice_loopback 1; +voicerecord"
    alias -PlayWAV "voice_inputfromfile 0; voice_loopback 0; -voicerecord"
    alias StartWAV "voice_inputfromfile 1; voice_loopback 1; +voicerecord; alias ToggleWAV StopWAV"
alias StopWAV "voice_inputfromfile 0; voice_loopback 0; -voicerecord; alias ToggleWAV StartWAV"
    alias ToggleWAV "StartWAV"

echo "Hold down [ to play a WAV."
echo "Press ] to toggle the WAV On/Off."

Q: How does the script work?
A: It's fairly simple and when you open up console it would say the echo part. I've actually modified it so you press [ to activate the everything and to turn it off just press ].

After finished that click on the Thumbs Up to activate it!

7) You're done!
Yes you are done but remember DO NOT spam your music since people get very annoyed by it.

NEW! Check out songs at the HLSS Section.
