Custom looping sounds
Difficulty: Intermediate
Category: CS:S > MappingAuthor(s): Deski

In this tutorial, I will teach you how to make custom looping sounds for your map from some of your favorite songs using Sound Forge. Many custom mappers use looping sounds from music for their maps. For example: Nipper, AlphaKennyOne, and HomicidalApe. It gives your map a sense of its own uniqueness. Alright, lets get started.

The first thing you’re going to need is one of your favorite songs. For example, I will use Blitzkrieg Bop from the Ramones.

The next thing you’re going to need is Sound Forge. Sound Forge has a free trial:Link For this tutorial, I will be using Sound Forge 8.0.

Open the song in Sound Forge and have Loop playback selected. This will be useful for trying to find the part of the song on which to have looped. Play your song and try to find a good part of the song that sound great looped by selecting the part of the song. Play with both ends of the selected part to make it sound like the song keeps going. Shown in picture 2. Now copy and paste that part into a new window. For Blitzkrieg Bop, I have chosen the intro.

Now you have to insert a Marker at the beginning of the song. Go to Special>Insert Marker shown in picture 3. Make sure you tick play looped. This will make it able to play loop in your map.

Now save it as .WAV file and put it in your sound folder.

Congratulations! You’ve made a custom looping sound!

It's a constructive tutorial, but incomplete. That's a great way to loop sounds, but you need to show the procedure to add the sounds for use in hammer. Also, using a .wav isn't the best idea, due to the lack of file compression. A better choice would be an mp3 for a longer loop. You should also have notes on using Pakrat to embed the custom file(s) into the .bsp.
