Setting up Hammer for the Very First Time! Difficulty: Beginner |

This tutorial will take you through downloading Source SDK and setting up and configuring Hammer Editor for the first time.
Let's Get Started!
Installing Source SDK- Open up Steam, and go to the tools tab. You should see something like this.

- In the list, you should see Source SDK. Select Source SDK and press install at the bottom right.

- Once you press Install the installation window should show up. Just keep pressing next and install the game.
- Once it's done installing, head back the tools tab in Steam, and it should now look like this:

You should notice that it is installed and currently downloading updates, this may take a while depending on your connection. Once you're done, continue on to the next Part.
Configuring Hammer EditorNow that you have Source SDK Installed, it is time to Open up hammer and Configure it so that it works for the game you are mapping for.
- Start off by opening up steam again if you haven't done so yet. Head over to the tools tab and launch Source SDK by double clicking on it.
- Once you've launched it, it should say that it is copying files, that may take a while so you'll have to wait. Once it's done, you'll be left with something like this

- First of all, make sure the game you want is selected from the drop down list at the bottom. If it is not there, make sure you have the game installed. If it still isn't showing after installation, try Double Clicking on Refresh SDK Content.

- Now, double click on Hammer Editor and it should open up.

- Head over to the top, and click on Tools>Options and the 'Configure Hammer' window should come up. It should look something like this

So now,let's start configuring it.
- The first thing you need to do is select which game you want it to be for. Select the same game you selected when you launched Source SDK, so in for me, it would be Counter Strike Source

- Now, it's time to select the fgd for the game. The fgd file is what defines all the entities in that game. So go ahead and press Add and look for cstrike.fgd and press Open.

- The next few settings you can change to your own liking, right now, let's move on to the Game Executable Directory.
- This is where you have to state the directory of the .exe for the game you selected. Since the game I selected is Counter Strike Source, I'm going to browse to my Counter Strike Source folder and select Open.
Once you've done that, you should have something like this:

- Now on to the Game Directory. This is where the Gameinfo.txt for each game is located, so it should be in the main folder of the game. For CSS it would be cstrike, for Hl2dm it would be hl2mp and for HL2, it would be HL2. So just browse and select that folder.

- The 3rd one is the directory where Hammer will store the VMF's for the maps you create. Depending on the game, it should be placed in the Sourcesdk_content>game>mapsrc. So for CSS, it would be Sourcesdk_content>Cstrike>mapsrc.

You're done! Press OK and restart Hammer. You can now Start mapping.
