//Adding light rays to your images and movies by J2K!
//============================================
This tutorial will teach you how to add realistic light rays (as you see shining through clouds at dawn and dusk) to your movie using Sony Vegas Video 5.0b and above.
//============================================
//Part 1 - Choose your file
//============================================
To begin, you will need and image or video that you feel would be complimented by adding light rays.
For this tutorial, i will use a photo of me and some friends on a cliff.
Import your file into Vegas:
File > Import > Media...
//============================================
//Part 2 - Add file to time line
//============================================
Drag your file onto the time line, as shown in the screenshot below:

From the menu up top, click:
Insert > Video track
Drag your chosen video or picture onto that track as well, as shown below:

//Part 3 - Track settings
//============================================
You will now have two identical video tracks. We will now adjust the compositing settings of these tracks to help us achieve the light rays effect.
On the top track, click the small film strip icon with the letter a on it (Compositing Mode) and select Add from the drop down menu.

Now go to the bottom of the screen and select the Video FX tab. From the list of Video FX categories, choose Radial Blur.

Click and drag Strong proportional onto the top video event, a dialog will be displayed with various settings for this special effect.
The box on the left with a small square in it is the position of the "sun" emitting the light rays. The rays are always pointed towards the center of the box from wherever this is positioned. The ideal positioning is usually in the sky, creating an effect of light rays coming from the sun, but feel free to be creative.
For my example i have moved it to the upper right, creating large shining rays from the sky.

You may notice the lights rays are overwhelming and make it hard to see things properly, such as me and my friends on the cliff. There are 2 ways to fix this.
The first way, which i generally use, is to adjust the Brightness and Contrast of the upper video event. To do so, go down to the Video FX list and select the Brightness and Contrast section. Drag the effect Darker onto the upper video event. A Video Event FX window will appear.
Adjust the brightness and contrast until the image or video looks the way you want. You may also need to strengthen or weaken your radial blur to change the visibility of the light rays.

Congratulations! You now have light rays in your movie or picture!
