Welcome to another on of my tutorials. In this tutorial I will teach you how to make very smooth corners using Displacements and the subdivision tool.
First of all, you might have read my other tutorial for maiking round corners using the vertex manipulator and you just found that it wasn't smooth enough. Well using displacements makes your corners very very smooth. The only downsides about this is that you'll then have to put a block behind the corners so that it doesn't cause leaks, and they corners are a bit too wide. If you want straight and 90 degree corners, then stick with the other tutorial.
Concave Corners
First thing's first, open up the map you plan on doing this in or just create a very quick map and add 2 walls to form a plain old corner.
Next, using the Texture Application Tool () Select the inside faces of the brushes created like so:
Now, move on to the Displacement tab and select Create and create a displacement at the power of 3.
Once you press Okay, you should have something like this:
Now, select both walls and Shift+Drag them to make copies. Copy the wall 4 times and align them so that they are right above each other. In Total you should have 5 sets.
Once you have done that, open up the Texture Application Tool () and select all the faces you see. Once you have them selected, move over to the Displacement tab again and press the Subdivide button.
You should now notice that the corner is now nice and smooth.
Only part of the corner is good enough for us to use, so go ahead and delete the 4 Outside pieces. This should just leave you with the center piece which is exactly the one you need. You can now place the corner where ever you want in your map because it's ready for use!
Convex Corners
Same process as before, open up your map or quickly whip one up.
Create 2 brushes that meet up at the corner but don't overlap.
Now, using the Vertex Manipulation Tool () Manipulate the corners so that they meet each other like the image below:
Now, using the Texture Application Tool () select the 2 outside faces of the brush and turn them into displacements like you did before, using a power of 3.
Now, select both brushes and Shift+Drag them to create 4 copies. In total you should have 5 copies of the walls and they should all be displacements.
Select all of them once again, and go back into the b>Texture Application Tool (). Move over to the Displacement tab and press the button Subdivide.
Your brushes should now look like this:
The last thing to do is get rid of the 4 outside pieces so it will leave you with only the center brush which is a nice smooth and round corner.
