Creating Rounded Corners
Difficulty: Beginner
Category: CS:S > MappingAuthor(s): SGT_kick_ur_ass

Welcome to another on of my mapping tutorials. In this tutorial, you will learn how to make simple rounded corners in your map. Using this technique makes your maps architecture look more realistic and it just looks good overall.

Let's get started:

Concave Corners

  1. First thing's first, open up the map you plan on doing this in or just create a very quick map and add 2 walls to form a plain old corner.

  2. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

  3. Now, create an 12 faced cylinder and put it near the corner. We will be using this as the base to trace around.

  4. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

  5. Now using the brush tool, create brushes and using the Vertex Manipulation Tool () manipulate the corners so the brush looks like a triangle so that they can either match or come very close to matching the Cylinder Faces.

  6. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Keep filling up the gaps by creating triangles. In total you should have 3 triangles with a 12 faced cylinder. You can use more faces, but that just means a lot more brushes.

  7. Final Step is to delete the reference Cylinder, once you do, you should see a nice rounded Concave Corner corner.

    There you go!

Convex Corners

Same process as before, open up your map or quickly whip one up.

  1. Create 2 brushes that meet in a corner like so:

  2. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

  3. Now create a Cylinder brush that fills the corner like so:

  4. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Note that you can use as many faces as you want on the cylinder. The more you use, the rounder the corner is.

  5. Now, grab the Clipping Tool () and just clip the cylinder so that it only takes up the corner and doesn't intersect any other brushes.

  6. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

In the end it should look something like this:

    Here is the final product.

Can anyone tell me in detail how to make the 12 faced cylinder?

Click the brush tool.
Now on the right where you choose the texture, below that, under VisGroups, there's the options for the brush.
There's an "Objects" drop down menu. Cylinder should be there.
Now under that there's a faces box, change that to whatever you want(12 for the tut).

For those who asked.

Notes: You devil!
there is an easier way to do that!
instead of using a cylinder as a reference we cut it into 4/4 and we only leave 1/4 and that 1/4 we use it as the corner.
