Adding maps to your server FTP Difficulty: Beginner |
| Category: CS > Server Administration | Author(s): |

There are two parts to adding maps.
PART 1: Adding the actual map files
1. Visit FPSBanana and download a map you like. You may download from here or here.
2. Open with WinZip (or you'll need WinRar if it's a .rar file) and extract the files to somewhere familiar. I usually extract them to desktop, or a new empty folder on my desktop. (This is all assuming the files aren't already in the directory structure, in which case you can just extract directly over the corresponding folder in the FTP. I never do this because I'm afraid of messing something up. Someone else can clarify later.)
3. Open your server's FTP. If you do not have an FTP manager, Internet Explorer works perfectly and acts just like the Windows folder GUI. If you use a service such as GameServers, log into your members area and access the FTP from there. It might be a good idea once inside the FTP to Add to Favorites in IExplore so that you don't have to go through the website to access it anymore.
4. Refer to Screenshot A. When you open the czero or cstrike folder, you will reach what I refer to as the "main" server FTP folder. One of the folders here is called "maps." Open it.
5. Go back to your desktop or wherever you saved your maps and open it (or them) You need to put the .bsp and .txt file into the maps folder, and the .bmp file into the "overview" folder (if there is a .bmp).
6. Some maps have a couple different folders. These folders have textures and things in them that are required, but most don't. If there are a few, then all you have to do is add those files into the "sounds" or "models" or "sprites" folders from the main czero or cstrike folder. The whole process is just matching files into the right folders.
PART 2: Adding the name of the map to your AMX menu so you can choose it
1. After the map files are added, you have to add them to the list so that you can change to them (assuming you have AMX installed). First, open the "addons" folder in the main folder. Then open "amxmodx" then "configs". These are all the files that control AMX. Right click on "maps.ini" and hit copy. Minimize everything then right click and paste the file on your desktop. If it asks you how you want to open the file, be sure to use Notepad that comes with your computer.
1.1. In the main czero or cstrike folder (the first big folder) there is one file called mapcycle.txt. This file really doesn't matter much, and I don't add my new maps to them. This file is the list of folders your server changes to automatically if no one is around. But you will have to add them to your AMX list if you haven't already, so that you can choose all the basic CS maps like dust, train, etc from AMX. [Screenshot B is our mapcycle.]
2. Open maps.ini, and it should just look like one giant sentence of maps. Click under this list and then type the name of the map that you downloaded. It will look something like de_dust2_cz or he_glass3 or similar. All you have to do is type the name of your map (the name of it is on the website you got it from) then hit enter. File>Save the Notepad, then close it. [Screenshot C is our maps.ini.]
3. Copy the file then paste it right back where you got it (the "configs" folder). It will ask you if you want to overwrite the file, and say yes.
4. After you make changes, you always have to either restart the server or change the map. You can change to another map from your AMX menu now, or put in your rcon_password xxxxx then rcon restart in console. It's easier just to change maps in my opinion. When you get to the new map, go back into your map list and press 9 (more) until you get to the end of your list. Your new map should be listed, and you can press the number to go to it.
5. You're done!
What happens if it doesn't work
1. If your server just pauses or kicks you or you get a connection warning, that means the map didn't work. This happens sometimes. If your server doesn't come back in five or ten minutes (it should), then you can go back into your GameServers page, hit "info" then hit "restart server" (assuming you got your server from a company).
2. You will have to open the FTP again and go into the "maps" folder and delete the .bsp and .txt file for that specific map. Make sure you have the right one. You're doing this because why would you want to take up space on your server with a map that crashes your wonderful server?
3. You also have to go back to the maps.ini file (from Part 2) and erase that map name from your list.
4. If you do all those things, and it still doesn't come back in five minutes, use the support page on GameServers (or whoever you have) to write them and tell them that you added a map but your server won't come back up. The reason I reference the companies so much is because I figure if you're smart enough to run your own actual server from a home PC or server, you know what you're doing enough to add your own maps, no problem.
Hope this helps! <3 |
