Autoexec.cfg Proper Creation
Difficulty: Beginner
Category: CS:S > ScriptingAuthor(s): xDamien

Edit: I have recently found out that this tutorial only works if you have Hide extensions for known file types unchecked in your control panel.

This tutorial only works if your files do not show the extensions (i.e .cfg .vtf .jpg) in their names

How To Create An autoexec.cfg file THAT ACTUALLY WORKS :D (For some of us at least)

Have you followed every guide to make an autoexec.cfg file to have them all turn out to not work?
Well this guide is for you.

Like many others I properly followed all instructions and couldnt get it to work and had to settle on the config file which jumbles up your scripts making it hard to alter them.

Instead autoexec.cfg leaves the files the way you wrote them.

What is autoexec.cfg??

autoexec.cfg is a file used to alter key commands.
Like some folders involved in installing skins..autoexec.cfg must be created.

Most guides will tell you to:

1. Open a text file(notepad recommended).

2. Save it as autoexec.cfg, type:all files, encoding ANSI...... into your cfg folder found within cstrike.

3. Write whatever you want in script form

and say that it will work....WRONG

All you really have to do is....

1. Copy your config file and place it in your cfg folder

2. Open your copy of config with word-pad

3. Save it as " autoexec " NOT autoexec.cfg OR IT WONT WORK

4. Script whatever the hell you want to script.

(Screenshot 1):Make sure that the console(press ~) says execing autoexex.cfg or it wont work and you did something wrong.

Other notes:

Use // to comment out everything after it on the line it is put on(the game will not read it and ignore it)

A list of commands, scripting aliases, etc. can be found at

Pros: Gets the autoexec.cfg working properly, which is VERY important. (especially for me.)
Improvements: Maybe tidy up the text a bit.

Ok.. for starters, if you really want to maintain your config.cfg then set it as "Read Only" Therefore CSS cant change it. And you need to understand that .cfg is a file extension and defines what program will be used to open/use the file, for source you need the file in cfg format. The problem you encoutered was where you Named it autoexec.cfg you need to specify on the second drop down menu, that you are saving it under "All Files" From then on it recognises any extensions added to the name as extensions, and not part of the file name

Appart from that, this is decent tutorial for those who have no clue about source or windows.

Nice Job. Keep it up, perhaps HTML formating?
