This tutorial is intended for absolute newbies. Most of what is said here may come off as common sense. These are the written and unwritten rules of CS1.6 pubbing.
Name
Do not use overly long or random nicknames, such as "T3h L33T0rZ M1D Sn1P4h w177 K177 J00!", because they may be unnerving to other players. And of course, do not use obsene, racist, intolerant or offensive nicknames such as "I hate gays and teh n1ggaz" or "Die bitch!".
Restraint in text chat
Be considerate to other players on the server. Do not fill the screens of other players with unnecesary or perhaps offensive messages. No one likes to read stuff like "Oh you b1tch thats utter BS the way you shot me in the head thru teh wallzors!!". Also, be patient to noobs. Everyone has been where they have been at one point of the life, and messages such as "Move you noob! Go plant the bomb!!!" will not only go unnoticed by the noobs, typing such comments will do nothing but waste your time and annoy other non-noob players as well.
Also, follow the geographical and cultural rules of the server you are on. Speak the language of the server. If, for example, you join a Dutch server then speak Dutch. If you do not know dutch, then stay quiet.
Remember the diversity of backgrounds and cultures of the gaming community is well represented on public servers as well: respect this and be polite to everyone.
Restraint in radio comms
Be patient with the usual radio-commands. A little goes a long way. There is no need to repeat "Team Fallback!!!" 10 times if you think that the enemy is surrounding you and your team: chances are that the teammates are well aware of the situation and made their choice. If they are to die, then so be it.
Do not mislead your teammates just for kicks: don't scream "Need Backup" just to make your teammates travel the map to help you only to find out there are no enemies in the vicinity.
Restraint in voice comms
Do not fill the headphones of people you don't know with off-topic chatter about the weather outside your window, or how pissed you are that your mousepad is broken. Also, consider the volume of your voice and the quality of your microphone: try not to annoy your teammates. If someone kindly requests you to stay quiet, then note the suggestion and submit.
Do not play your favorite music track into your microphone: chances are not everyone shares your musical taste.
Facing the objectives
Carry out the map tasks that you are faced with. If you are a terrorist and have the bomb, try not to be a lone-wolf and wander off into parts of the map where there are no teammates. This is because if you die, your teammates will have to travel large distances to reach the bomb. Also, do not linger: the clock is ticking and if it runs out and you do not plant the bomb, you lose the round and the teammates share the cost through shrinked money gain at the start of the next round.
If your teammate planted the bomb, do not leave the bombsite and wander off, as this will put both the bombsite and your whole team at risk.
If you are counter-terrorist and the bomb has been planted, go and attempt to defuse it, do not annoy your teammates and be a coward.
Respect the dead
If you find yourself the only survivor in your team, then respect the dead, don't test their patience. Make haste and eliminate the remaining enemies or carry out the map objective. Do not spend the remainder of the round camping your spawn.
Awareness of the skills
When faced with a suspicious activity or playing style of the another player on the server, do not immediately go screaming "OH NOES! WE H4VE HAXORZ! KICK!!! KICK!! BAAAN!". There are many reasons not to do so. First: remember that skill levels vary greatly. The player that you suspect might be hacking may simply be much more skilled than yourself, might have better headphones, might have a better mouse. Second: it is not for you to decide who cheats and who doesn't, trust the admins on the server to carry out their duty. Do not annoy them with "OMG JOO ARE THE ADMIN, WHERE are you looking, ban the haxor!". Third: maybe the suspected hacker simply uses 'ghosting' - he might be advised and warned about enemy positions through external voicecomm applications such as Ventrilo or Teamspeak, commonly termed 'Vent' or 'TS'. Fourth: even if the player is really hacking, the argument simply cannot be won. Stay calm, just record a demo and send it to the admins on the server site. Or disconnect and find another server: don't waste your nerves and darken your mood, the world is not perfect.
AFKs
Don't be careless and go AFK(Away From Keyboard) when on a server. First, this will annoy your teammates and they may find that they have to wait for the enemy to kill you if you are the only remaining live team member. Second, which is most annoying, you might have the bomb if you are a Terrorist, and the only way for your teammates to plant and fulfill the objective and win the round would be either killing all enemies or camping round the spawn, waiting for enemies to frag you and collect the bomb.
If you think that you will only be AFK for a couple of minutes then simply become a Spectator and rejoin the team when you are back. Be considerate.
Grenade Care
Consider other players, do not spam smoke grenades. This will annoy other members for many reasons, one being lack of vision and the other a large drop in video performance. Also, do not be a 'flash-ho' and spam flash grenades from your spawn. And most importantly be careful with flash grenades when around your teammates. Don't blind your teammates.
Friendly Fire
Value the lives and the health of your teammates. Take care with your bullets and HE grenades when near teammates, utilise your radar to ensure no friendly-fire incidents on your behalf. If you accidentially kill a teammate, it is useless to remark "YOU walked into MY line of fire biatch", because chances are that your victim will think otherwise. Don't be surprised if you will be punished for the teamkill (TK). Simply apologise.
If you are teamkilled, chances are that it wasn't intended. The best action you can take is forgive the teamkiller. It will demonstrate your level of consideration and positive perception.
Politeness and Support
Don't be mean and say 'Ha! You just died' when witnessing a particularly amusing and shameful death while spectating. Consider the feelings of other players.
If you witness a player demonstrate an outstanding frag or style of handling a situation, commend and congratulate him with a simple 'Good shot ('Shot!')', 'N1 (Nice)' or 'Pld (Well Played')', because such remarks will always be welcome and be well appreciated.
Follow the rules of the server
Many servers implement and enforce simple and logical rules such as 'No advertising', 'No insults', 'No wallbanging', 'No AWP/Shield'. Also, set your rates to an acceptable level which is within the server's guidelines. Attempt to minimise your lag and ping, to ensure that other players do not feel discomfort when playing with you. Remember that you play on someone else's server: respect and follow the rules.
