Embedding Custom Content In The BSP (Pakrat) Difficulty: Beginner |

Introduction
When making custom content for maps, there is two ways to distribute it. The first way is to simple put the content in a folder and supply it alongside your BSP file. The better way to do it is to actually put the custom content into the actual BPS file, this means that it is impossible to recieve the map without the custom content included. It is also much more prefered by server admin, as they have less work to do when putting the map on their server.
This tutorial will show you how to use an appropriate program to place custom content into the BSP. The main program you will need to download is Pakrat. This is a version of BSPZIP with a better GUI.
How To Zip Content
First thing to do, is to make sure all of your custom content is in the correct folders of your CS:S game. Make sure your map is fully compiled as this should be one of the last jobs you do before distribution of your map.
Install the program and open it by double-clicking "pakrat" which is a MS-DOS Batch file. Select the BSP file that you want to add content to (Screenshot B), this will then display what is already inside it. Then click "add" to place your custom content into the BSP (Screenshot C), it should automatically set the file path correctly and after everything is added you will have something that looks like Screenshot D.
Then click on "save" and then the BSP will be modified. You can save it under a different name, but you can save it under the same filename, replacing the version without content zipped into it.
Alternativly to manually doing it, you can click on "auto" that will literally automatically add the content. However this doesn't always work, so is better to do it manually. Remember that this can be used with any Source game, or any that uses .BSP files to save its maps.
Finally, i suggest giving a friend the file to make sure that nothing is missing and you have suceeded in zipping all the content into it. There you have it, it is very simple to do this and should be done with ANY custom content included in BSP files. However this is only suitable for single, one off maps like a CS:S map. |
