My idea is to have a check box labelled Offer reward? when posting threads.

Along side that check box, if Offer Reward? is chosen, it should have a text box labelled Reward amount. This would allow the person asking the question to offer a certain amount of points as a reward for people that help them.

This also motivates the community to help each other out!

The points would be immediately deducted from the thread poster, to avoid people getting ripped off when working hard to answer questions.

It would also need an Accept button at the top of every reply post. When the original thread creator finds a suitable, working answer, they can accept it, awarding the points to the first or best response they get!

The forum's thread lists would need an extra column for Reward. When a question has a reward, this column would display the amount of points the reward is. When the thread poster accepts an answer, this would change the points amount to Claimed.

What do you - the community of FPSB - think of this idea?

What if nobody knows the answer, or nobody replies? do you get the points back after an amount of time or something?

It's best left to the administrators and moderators to declare that it won't be answered and return the points, along with closing the thread. This would be done with the original thread poster's consent in most cases, to check if they are willing to wait a little longer and don't mind their points being on standby.

People would probably try to exploit the time limit... offer huge amounts of points, get there answer, and not accept the answer until the time is up and they have their points back... which would be very annoying for the people trying to earn some points by putting time and effort into there responses.

Sounds like a nice way to get some extra points.

The problem that I see with this is that many people asking questions are new to the site and so wouldn't be able to put up as many points as the veteran users which could lead to them being ignored.

Isn't this an over complication of the simple action required in posting "Need help 300 pts" and then donating 300 points to whoever helps out the most?

Visit: www.Experts-Exchange.com to see a very similar system in action. It is what inspired this idea for FPSB.

Well in a perfect world where everyone is honest and not forgetful, sure thing.

At the moment people can say they will give a lot of points to make people work harder to answer the question, then not give the promised reward. Even if they just get there answer, try it out and see that it works, they could easily just forget to come back and award the points.

I just feel a formal rewards system would further motivate the community to helping each other, get question threads answered faster and let forums move forward.

Excellent idea, I think it would really help formalize that type of thread. There should be a minimum number of points though.

I think a minimum points of 50 would be sufficient.

New members to FPS Banana as of the implementation of this system would be given 100 starter points for asking questions. This will give everyone a fair go.

very true. "1 point for help" people will go "er..."

a minimum should be set if you are to do that.

No, under no circumstance should new members automatically get points. It's "Ripe" for abuse.

Isn't it funny when I said this in a thread, about that topic. You said the exact same thing.
