NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT
Is it good?

Hey FPSB, this is my first post, I hope that it's in the right place.

Anyways, with my next two paychecks, I plan to buy a computer with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT GPU in it.

My friend has the 7950, and it runs maps very well and can run games like Crysis with not much lag. I heard that the following three graphics cards after the 7950 completely sucked though.

So what I was wondering is if the 8600 is good? If you have it, how much FPS do you run in de_dust2 and de_inferno?

Can't say for sure without knowing the rest of your specs, but I'd avoid the 8600GT. You can move this thread to the tech forum where it belongs by editing the thread.

Welcome to the Banana.

The 8600 is not a bad card, so to speak, at least from what I have read. If you have a choice, and would like a better alternative, I would say to upgrade to the 8800GT instead. Although if you are buying an entire new system this might not be in the same price range.

To answer your main concern, you should get more than 80fps on all maps on CS:S with the 8600, with everything turned up at a res of 1280.

I wouldn't even consider getting an 8000 series anymore, I would go with an ATI 4850.

hes right. i use a 8600GT and i get roughly 80-120 fps on dd2. even considering i have a 1.6GHz CPU and 1 GB RAM. its actually pretty good in my eyes. and nope i havent overclocked it.

The 8800GT is in a completely different price range from the 4850. It is still a very strong card at a very good price if you can't spend the money for a 4850.

8600GTS is a different card than the 8600GT and therefor what you can run at is meaningless.

The 8800GS (9600GSO) is enough to run CS:S at a constant 100fps with all settings at high and a little AA and AF.

7900 GS is great for CS:S. Get 8600 if you like DX10, but CS:S is DX9.

Don't get an 8600GT it's not even a good gaming card. Nvidia 7900GS, 7950's and the 8800s (and above) are all great cards. Or their ATI equivalents (x1950 Pro, XTX, radeon 3850, 3870).

Does that matter? The 8600- can play CS:S too.

Of course it doesn't matter, but I'm just saying you're getting 2 in 1 with the 8600, but it has been proven that 7900 GS has a bit more juice than 8600, not by much though.

My friend plays with 8600 at a steady 50 FPS on CS:S Max settings no AA.

Notice I said DX10. CS:S only uses 9.0c.

That's garbage. I get twice the FPS (atleast) with AA and AF on 2x with a card thats 2-3 years older.

How? I used to have an 8600GT and ran like 150fps with AA and AF

CS:S is an absurdly cpu bound game (As are all Source engine games) so the video card is not as important as in most other games.

His rigs bottlenecking. Same problem with my 7900 GS. Pretty sure it's because of the ram. Should be getting 100 FPS but only getting 60. Lol.

Is vsync used in all games? Because usually that's what happens in all the other games I play. Does vsync affect visual effects? I want to keep the graphics as they are. Never really looked into that.

The 8600 GT is a good card. it handles things well. it can handle any source game with ease and is capable of rendering crysis very well with shaders on medium.

The great thing about it is that it does not require a separate power connection, it just runs off of the motherboard.

If you wan't a better card for the price of an 8600 GT, I would recommend an ATi card.

say an ATi Radeon HD 3850 Pro 256MB

also, I use an 8600 GT. It's underrated in some games. Don't expect to run CoD4 on max settings though.

I got one.. It ran Crysis pretty good on medium (though if you want ton play crysis with nice graphics I recommend a better card as it can lag at some points when it gets to much), but it handles TF2 (which uses the newer source engine) on everything on high (veryhigh if optionable) except AA and AS (anti-alias and antistropic, I play with these on low-medium settings and rest on highest). :D

Avoid anything in the 8XXX series that doesn't have an 88 before it, none of them are made completely for gaming. These cards were built for average users who watch videos, and those who fiddle with some photoshop/video editing etc. They are however, a cheap solution if you are very low on money and can't afford high end video cards. If you're looking for a card from Nvidia still (don't know if you want an ATI or not), then I'd go for an 8800 GT or the 9800GTX. Both are reasonably cheap at this time and will give you a good bang for your back.

PS: The 9800GTX + will be coming out soon, watch for them.

I have NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX, it runs CS:S like nothing, and crysis can be ran on low gfx, it also has many support drivers, so, as some of the members above me said that 8k cards don't have new drivers yet, so, you should wait before buying it or just be happy with a 7k

ATi Radeon x550, but I play medium-high details and get like high 70's in fps.

Do listen to everyone saying the overpriced and hyped 8800....
get the 9600gt, its the best card for price atm, for ati and nvidia.
http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/evga_geforce_9600_gt_ssc/images/vs_8800_gtx.png
so the 120$ max 9600gt is worth it, seeing youll only get mabey 10+ max frames at anything above 1680 x 1050, if your playing below that, mabey 5 frames max. so not worth the extra 60$ or so for the 8800 imo

Actually, not true, the ATI 4850 is much faster and powerful than the NVIDIA 9600, and some of the cards are even cheaper, if not the same price as the 9600. I'd get the 4850 if your going for a card around that price range.

Did I say 100 dollars cheaper? No.

NVIDIA 9600GT - $214.99

ATI HD4850 - $189.99

It outbeats a 9800.

Ok, maybe it is $10 more than the 3rd one, but I'd rather spend 10 more dollars on a card that will operate at a much faster speed.
