Hi I hope you can help me plz ;-) much appreciated all. Here's the prob:

I was increasingly experiencing the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) due to some idiot that made this case not bothering to apply Thermal Glue or whatever u call it to the CPU+fan. I think it almost burnt lol.

So i've applied the 'glue' and now my system no longer overheats & works fine, but now my system displays the wrong chip & running speed :/
It should be:
AMD Athlon XP 2600 running at 1.9Ghz
But now is displays on startup & My Computer:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ running at 1.54Ghz

I'm not sure what to do tbh, i tried increasing the CPU voltage from 'Auto' to +10% (w/cpu temp. monitor enabled) in the BIOS but that didn't help the temp monitor kicked in & shut it down so I reverted back settings. Sorry if this post is a bit long-winded I don't want to miss anything out, here's my specs, any help or questions would be greatly appreciated. :) thanks guys

Device Manager shows:ACPI Uniprocessor PC
Windows Xp Pro Sp2
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (this should be 2600)
Nvidia GeForce 6200

Probably AMD Cool'n'Quiet. It drops your cpu speed when your cpu isn't being used as much to save power and lower temperatures.

(tnx for the quick reply dude, n1) really? How can i disable this function or maybe tell the cpu that I'm active again. cos i did give up on the case for a while & it sat in cupboard for a year or so

It will turn the cpu speed back up when it starts to get taxed and needs the extra power. You can turn off Cool'n'Quiet in your BIOS if you want to, but there is no need to.

I may have to do that because i've been pushing it to the limit trying to play HL:Ep2 its slow :/ I used to play CS:S on all settings set to recommended 'high' gettin' decent fps. Can u tell meh how 2 turn off CnQ in bios or a program i could run to deliberately 'tax' the cpu. Thanks so much 4 ur help

Episode 2 is much more taxing than CS:S, I would think it to be normal for you to be not getting as much FPS on your system. Try lower settings.

I do get what ur saying Jaydee - Episode 1 was more taxing than HL2 & Episode 2 is more taxing than Ep1,CS:S is least taxing (i dont play much HL2:DM i wouldn't know) yeh i noticed that, things like shadow/texture detail in ep2 were taxing so i turned them down/off i have no choice like u say. I turn HDR off.

Also b4 the fix I used 2 b able to run CS:S on the recommended high settings on busy servers with smoke nades & dust swirling in the wind without any lag. But now its a 2000+1.54Ghz its too slow, I've resorted to toning my css settings all low to get good steady fps. Maybe I should play CS:S on high settings to tax the cpu and wait for it to disable 'Cool'n'Quiet' or which section of BIOS is the settings in?

I've never installed this AMD Cool'n'Quiet software & dont have it in BIOS, here's my CMOS Voltage/frequency after I tried 'Optimized Defualt' & 'Top Performance':
Spread Spectrum Module [enabled]<---I believe this enabled when i loaded Optimized Defualts
CPU Host Clock Control [disabled]
CPU Host Frequency 133Mhz
PCI/AGP Frequency 33/66Mhz
DRAM Clock [auto]
CPU Over Voltage Control [auto]
AGP O.V.C. [auto]
DIMM O.V.C [auto]
Since Optimizing Defualts a few hours ago today i notice System Properties now shows 1.56Ghz, b4 i touched the bios it showed 1.54Ghz so something increased their lol but still 2000+ :/ its a Barton btw.

I have CPU-Z & Speed Fan 4.34 Installed - not set to 'Automatic fan speed' yet cos I just uninstalled an old version of SpeedFan. I noticed in CPU-Z my BIOS is : Award version.F11 Date 09/03/2003 !!! thats an old BIOS I Should flash/update it u think?

In Cpu-Z i noticed one of my 512 DDR333 has frequency 500Mhz/166Mhz while the other 2 ddr show 133/166Mhz

I've put Power Saving Scheme to 'Home' like it should be or 'Presentation' as i heard this can disable AMD Cool'n'Quiet but no luck ;'( plz plz plz I need help

I'm really not very familiar with AMD systems so I'm not sure how much more I can help you. If it is Cool'n'Quiet, it should be increasing your cpu clock when needed, so you don't need to worry about it nor giving you its full power for games. If it's something else, then that is outside of my area of expertise.

You're using overclocking software? In that case, its possible that you have the wrong clock selected, and it's telling you otherwise. Just a guess.

Trying turning off SpeedFan, restart your computer, and then check and see if everything is still wrong. If that doesn't work, I don't know.

Change the FSB to 166MHz.

And if it's still overheating, try to track down a new heatsink.

Thanks to Yyum + Markworth for replies.

Markworth - do I change FSB in BIOS with 'CPU Host Frequency'? I have no extra fancy bois options

Yyum - I'm unsure how to disable Speed Fan maybe I should uninstall it as the system runs fine without it, still remains slow specs :/

Yes, CPU host frequency is FSB speed.

Socket A processors still used variable FSB speeds to determine model. What has happened is that your system has defaulted to 133MHz for some reason thus it detects the wrong model and runs too slow. With better cooling, you could increase that even further to get higher clock speeds. I wouldn't really bother going past 200MHz, though. The entire system and motherboard has to be able to take the stress as well. If you have any further overheating problems, you should consider getting a better heatsink anyways.

Tnx 4 the response Markworth, much thanx

The highest value I can set in BIOS is 165Mhz :S thats my limit I'll try that. 200Mhz FSB would be awsome if i could set it somehow.

I'm unfamiliar with SpeedFan, could you recommend a user-friendly overclock utility? In SpeedFan->Config->Fan I see 4 fans:
Fan1 3590RPM
Fan2 3444RPM
Fan3 0RPM all voltages & speeds checkboxes are ticked(checked) the option 'Automatically variated' in the speed menu is unchecked. Totally I'm unfamiliar with SpeedFan :-/

Did u generate that link yeh?cos thats exactly the type of Fan I would use for AMD Athlon XP 2600+ with 462 Socket A, however my fan works ok & used to cool fine at 1.9Ghz.

plz plz plz if u know a util to up my fsb more than 165 i will be in your debt my friend :)

If the BIOS has a FSB lock, it's best to not bother overclocking any further. Software overclocking can be unstable and requires you to update the settings everytime you restart. If you still insist, see if you can find ClockGen or SetFSB somewhere.

Another possible option on Socket A processors is to pencil mod it into an unlocked processor. Again, you probably shouldn't do this unless you're certain what you're doing and have sufficient cooling. If the BIOS detects everything properly, a successful pencil mod should allow you to increase the multiplier (your default is apparently 11.5). I'm not really sure how far those old processors will go with that method. Maybe 2400Mhz?

Allrrighty then I have good news & bad news: Bad news first:

Windows now detects a RAID controller which it can't install. This is my motherboard -> http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/motherboards_d/Gigabyte/GA-7VAXP/
as u can see it doesn't have RAID so I should just ignore this right?

Good news:

In BIOS if up FSB to 148Mhz it changes to 2200+ :)
If I set it to 152Mhz changes to Athon 1748Mhz [1.75Ghz] :) thats not bad.
I might stick to 152 if its stable, or i will download ClockGen or SetFSB to experiment.

Lastly thanks 4 the pencil mod link :D - who would think just a pencil & credit card could do that! It looks so simple I'm giving some serious thought to actually do this. And yes ur right its 11.5x default.

Tnx 4 ur support dude I totally will not forget the name Markwoth when i evolve into Jesus (lol?)

Before this closes can I ask;

Should my PCI/AGP Frequency always be set to 33/66Mhz or can I go to 40/80 and so on?
If I pencil mod - will the multiplier settings appear in my bios, or will i have to set jumpers on my mobo?
Also do I change the core voltage in the 'DRAM' bios setting? here's my BIOS Stats;

Yes, leave PCI/AGP at 33/66.

Your motherboard should have a multiplier option in BIOS, but if it has multiplier jumpers for some crazy then you may have to use those.

Adding voltage is only needed for overclocking stability. You may need this depending on how far you try to go, but be warned that added voltage makes the CPU hotter.

My PCI/AGP automatically goes up as I increase fsb, what are the consiquences of higher rates? However I can increase the CPU Host Frequency then disable CPU Host Clock Control thus it shows 33/66 with increased fsb, recommend this method?

Hmm..I see no multiplier options so I will readup about overclockin this particular mobo.

What are the obvious signs of a nasty overclock? I dont really want 2 add volts tbh, right now I'm at;
core speed 1838.8Mhz
159.9Mhz @ 11.5x
core volt. 1.664-1.680V
(stats by CPU-Z)

tnx again

slightly off-topic just to mention i have a Sempron 1.7Ghz i was given recently and told it would work in this mobo not sure if I should bother with it. I'd have to transfer the grease by rubbing the two chips together lol i dont have that stuff i really should get some

Yes, you should use the option that limits the AGP/PCI frequency. Raising the AGP frequency won't do much good at all, and raising the PCI bus can cause instability.

Multiplier option may not show up until the processor is actually unlocked.

Obvious sign of a bad OC: Computer crashes or reboots. SuperPI can't even complete 1M.

Try to avoid giving it more than 1.7v. It should be fine where it's at since it technically needs only 1.65v.

Your current processor is probably better than the Sempron.

You know about the CTRL+F1 trick on Gigabyte BIOSes right?

I will defo have to unlock, might just have to flick a switch on mobo.

I got SuperPI 1.5 for regular 1M stability checks, tnx.

Also i'll try CTRL+F1 :D cos it doesnt show

Lasted I checked, some of the lower dual core processors are running rather cheap at the moment. I got a 2400+ 2.4ghz dual core for 60$, and I have it running 3.0ghz overclocked- with the stock fan. But I also have 4 120mm fans in my case, so that may help a little bit.

3Gb dual core for 60 dollars or pounds. Hope u say dollars cos I live in the UK. I go to my local Silicon Group (UK) for computer parts.

CTRL+F1 DOES get me access to the 'Advanced Chipset Features' :D tnx Markworth, i'm still learning hehe. Some of the features include;
Fast command - Normal(enabled) / Fast / Ultra
DRAM Timing - Manual(enabled) / Auto
DRAM CAS Latency - 1.5 / 2 / 2.5(enabled) / 3
Bank Interleave - Disabled(enabled) / 2Bank / 4Bank
Tras Non-DDR400/DDR400 - [6T/8T] / [7T/10T](enabled)
....and so on.
I see nothing obviousl that relates to the multiplier, I might experiment with the Fast command value

No idea. Did you get a thermal grease on the package part (the part that's PCB or ceramic) of the processor? If pencil traces can unlock the multiplier, it goes to reason that thermal paste could have an effect.
