So I was thinking about making a map on some small rocky moon type thing, and I was going to put the entire playable area in some building that you could look out into space from through the windows. But then I thought, wouldn't it be cool if the playable area was spherical and you could walk around the entire surface of the planet in a loop, like in Mario Galaxy or a certain level in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. I was thinking I could maybe use trigger_push's aimed towards the center of the planet, but that seems like it would be messy and the orientation of the player's view wouldn't change, i.e. the player's head would be touching the ground on the bottom of the planet. Does anybody have any ideas of how I could accomplish this?

You cannot fix the orientation of the player's view. It will be upside down at the bottom of the planet.

Wow, I just got a picture of that in my head, and that map would be hilarious.

Call nintendo up? seriously don't think the engine is capable of doing something like that

Source is a realistic physics engine, not a fantasy one and thus can't do what you want.

The gravity of the Earth functions identically to what I am suggesting. Are you saying that the Earth's gravity is "fantasy"?

Also, I noticed that if you change the pitch, yaw, or roll of the info_player_teamspawn, the view of the player is flipped, and possibly the actual player's model (I have yet to see if it is the model though), so I was thinking there would be a way to flip the player's view, if not the actual model.

Yes thats done by editing gravity levels, which is realistic, not ever object in the universe has the same gravity.

Unless your creating a level that is hundreds of thousands of times larger than you possibly can in hammer, then no its not realistic.

Boohoo double post, that was actually more than 40 minutes apart.

Perhaps the core of the planet is incredibly dense?

I; just saying surfing is in no way realistic if your trying to back that up then...

Dude, just give it a try.
The worst scenario possible would be that it will be pretty weird.
Which, of course, will add to the awesomness :D

I, Agent Jazz, support this map. It sounds like that it would be so much fun to play (if you found a way of fixing the gravity and perspective)

Earth is flat..... right?

Seriously, that would be really sweet, like the Ratchet and Clank space levels.

Perhaps it is, more dense than any element know to man, which based on the fact that elements become increasing unstable after reaching an atomic mass of 100 is every element which form a planet, therefore not being possible.

The point is moot. Source won't let you do it. Its designed around real world physics.

"Real world physics" would be those of the real world. In source, everything goes down. In the real world, everything is pulled towards a center point (oversimplification, but I assume you know how it works). In this respect, source isn't a real world physics engine.

In this respect you don't know that. The model that source uses is that everything is part of a larger mass ie a planet. Most notably EARTH. If you compare the size of a map to the size of the earth you will note that the direction gravity effects is actually correct, vertically downwards.

Wrong vilham, but anyway, ontopic, i doubt its possible as source is a very simple engine, however, i do remember playing gmod 9, and coming across a SWEP which was a blackhole, basically you put this swep wherever and everything around it got sucked into it, therefore it is possible (contradiction ftw...) but it would be buggy, you wouldnt be able to jump etc. and the map would be one big prop. i suggest you get gmod, find the blackhole gun swep, and study its coding.

Of course falling objects move "vertically downward," that is obvious. However, "vertically downward" in source means "a decrease in the object's y-axis position" so, if one could build an earth sized sphere in the source engine, objects on the bottom of the sphere would appear to "fall into the sky" to an observer, whereas in the real world, objects fall downwards to the center of gravity. What I'm trying to say is, vertically downward in source and vertically downward in the real world are entirely different. Gravity in source is not the same as gravity in real life.

You can do it, it has been done. But you can only do it for an independent mod, because of the degree you have to reprogram the main Source engine in order to do it. Source can understand and it is entirely possible to do this, but you would need to be an adept programmer making a mod.

To be possible you need to start a mod and reprogramme the source engine...
Possibly changing alot of x,y,z axis degree and changing the phisycs state in some area by going in a trigger..o.O
So yeah it's "possible" if you are a experienced C++ programmar.

Well, technically it is possible it just has to be coded. A mod for Half Life 1 called Natural Selection had an alien that players could be. That alien was able to walk on walls and be upside down. As I said though, it would need to be coded.

What if it weren't really spherical, but strategically placed instant teleports sent the player back where you started. like a fake mobius strip or something.

Im guessing you don't know what a model is. End of.

Could work, but you'd be limited to just one planet with basically no background at all

you are retarded. sufing is made possible with sv_airaccelerate 100, or 150. thats it.

I do apologise, I didn't realise that playing a totally retarded map and server type makes you none retarded :/

Every source player should of course know the exact console commands to turn a good server into a shit one.

You sir are an idiot.

excuse me? IM the idiot?

Why should i be restricted to playing aim, fy, de, and cs maps?

Just because you dont like a particular map type, does not mean that its a shitty one.

Im guessing youve only played greatriver, one of the shittiest built surf maps ever made. BUT, the gameplay is infact, one of the best and most famous in the world of surf.

You probably took one look at it, thought it was terrible looking, tried to surf, couldnt, and now you hate it.

because you probably dont like challenges.. but thats just an assumption.

may i point you over to maps like surf_ny_platinum, and surf_amplitude_light. no shooting involved, just surf skill.

both are EXTREMELY well made and are very pleasing to the eye. and offer quite a challenge to the inexperienced.

I hope to see you open your eyes a bit, and not say something is shitty just because you are not familiar with it.

This wont work. Even with gravity on it; once you hit a certain angle of decent you will fall to the exact bottom of the sphere and hang there by your head because of the gravity holding you to it.

You cannot do this.

End this flame war. End this thread.

Clearly you missed the point. You called me an idiot for not knowing a specific code for a game mode I don't play, thus your an idiot for expecting everyone to know the exact console input to alter a server to meet the requirements of that game mode.

Which didn't even matter because even if that is the console code it still sticks to the fact that its a realistic physics engine, not all atmospheres have the same air density hence the airacceleration command to change that.

Im going to leave it there. I answered the OP straight up.

Source uses a realistic physics model, using real world physics. Therefore unless you recode source slightly, which I don't know how you can seeing as you can't recode the physics engine just other sections of code.

I was actually thinking about something like that, like every "facet" of the sphere would be horizontal and have a teleport to every other section and some sort of "camera" showing the adjacent part of the sphere with a slight angle, it could work.

Does anybody know how to make a brush that is like a "screen" and will show other parts of the map? through it?

The gravity of the levels on Super Mario Galaxy seems to be caused by a black hole at the center of every "planet."

This could easily be done by creating a sphere with a magnetic pull and lowering the gravity, I'm not sure on the rotating camera view as you go around though
