We have been to the moon six times.
Twice in 1969 (Apollos 11 & 12).
Twice in 1971 (Apollos 14 & 15).
Twice in 1972 (Apollos 16 & 17).
In each case, a 3-man crew was sent to the Moon, two of whom landed, whilst the third remained on the mother ship in orbit around the Moon.
The twelve who landed on the Moon were:
Apollo 11 [July 20, 1969]:
[1] Neil Armstrong
[2] Buzz Aldrin
Apollo 12 [November 19-20, 1969]:
[3] Pete Conrad
[4] Alan Bean
Apollo 14 [February 5-6, 1971]:
[5] Alan Shepard
[6] Edgar Mitchell
Apollo 15 [July 31–August 2, 1971]:
[7] David Scott
[8] James Irwin
Apollo 16 [April 21-23, 1972]:
[9] John W. Young
[10] Charles Duke
Apollo 17 [December 11-14, 1972]:
[11] Eugene Cernan
[12] Harrison Schmitt

It basically came down to money and public interest. At first, beating the Soviets to the moon in the midst of the Cold War was America's number one priority in the space industry, so we poured millions upon millions of dollars into that field. After the first successful flight and landing, the public was still excited, so the U.S. completed 6 more Apollo flights, 5 of which landed on the moon. By that point, the public basically was bored of the same routine mission after another, plus, the Saturn V rocket was very expensive and could only be used once. For each Apollo flight, NASA had to blow another fortune on money for the trip. It basically got to the point where NASA decided, "Been there, done that." And it was simply too expensive for not really accomplishing much.

Yea, NASA now has the "Orion" and "Ares" spacecrafts/rockets which are intended for visiting the moon again, and later for missions to Mars.
The first crewed flight of the Orion spacecraft aboard an Ares I rocket is scheduled for no later than 2015, when it will fly to the International Space Station. Altair's first landing on the moon with an astronaut crew is planned for no later than 2020.
Source
"Altair" is the new name of the Lunar landing module.

Maybe because we've been there a bunch of times already and we know that there's basically nothing there, and it costs a crap load of money to go there. :)

You mean the moons Deimos and Phobos? Making the story in doom come true. :D
Anyway just sending people out to space costs several millions maybe billions of dollars. Sending people to the moon would be even more.

The main reason is because we went there so many times and right now we are concentrating on the International Space Station (lots and lots of money going to that) and now we need more funding if we are to go back to the moon. It is also a lot to prepare for because, you have to check the thing for cracks, leaks, other bad things, and then you have the astronaut regular training and if everything doesn't check out then the launch is delayed.

Also, the ISS is where the mission to Mars will re-fuel and re-supply, and if that's not being maintained, uh-oh!
