Diablo III has been confirmed!

---------------------------

-> Updates are posted in chronological order from top to bottom! <-
So basically, look at the bottom of the main thread (this top section) for the most up to date info!

---------------------------

I got pretty excited reading this, Diablo II is one of my favourite games of all time, and it's only a matter of time before Diablo III is unleashed on the world. Here is a bit of the article:

ArticleWe reported yesterday about the new icy splash screen which has appeared on many of Blizzard's corporate and gaming sites. There's already tons of speculation speeding around the web about it, and of course the pot was only stirred all the more this morning when the picture changed slightly: the light in the middle of the cracked ice became brighter, and there's some new detail that can be seen through the ice, including a rune of some sort just to the upper right of the center. we can probably assume that the picture will change more each day until something is announced at the Worldwide Invitational. However, the question remains: What is being announced?

The Diablo 3 camp, for its part, generally considers the image to be that of the worldstone -- the worldstone is actually red instead of blue, but there's always a possibility the color could have changed due to the events of Diablo 2. You'll remember that at the end of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction, the archangel Tyrael was forced to destroy the worldstone after Baal defiled it. Even he didn't know what would happen once it was broken.

Splashscreen:

And then it goes on to try and link all the new stuff with Diablo 3, read on..

ArticleHe dug into the workings of WoW's website to give us some ideas on what could be going on. He notes first that the folder name with the splash screen images on Blizzard's site is called 232309. If you consider that W is the 23rd letter of the alphabet, and I the 9th, that would spell WWI -- Worldwide Invitational. Likewise, also located in that folder is a strange image that is obviously part of a larger one, named 04.JPG -- which might translate to the D in Diablo.

Oh really? ..

I hope so.
Either way, whatever this is, it looks very intriguing. Any thoughts?

Update! [27/06/08] Read on below for further details..

Blizzard Affirms Upcoming Game Announcement; Diablo 3 'Confirmed,' Claims Leading Diablo Fan SiteBlizzard design VP Rob Pardo revealed that the company does intend to announce a new title at the event at this weekend's Blizzard Worldwide Invitiational in Paris, but declined to offer further details.

"So you want me to announce the game before our announcement?" he told GamesIndustry. "No offense, but I think there's like 300 people here, and I'll be ripped apart by 8000 people [at the Invitational] if I pre-announce it—but it's going to be really exciting. I think everybody here will be really excited about the announcement."

Moreover, Diablo fan website DiabloII.net reports that Blizzard's game announcement will be Diablo III, the long-awaited next title in Blizzard's hack-and-slash RPG series.

The site claims to have confirmation of the forthcoming announcement from "inside sources," but does not specify whether the information came from within the company or an external source.

Speculation flared this week over teaser images posted on the front page Blizzard's website, which many believed to contain possible connections to the anticipated hack-and-slash sequel.

Other evidence pointing towards a Diablo III announcement includes the Diablo3.com domain, now empty after previously directing to a Diablo community website. The domain was acquired by Blizzard last month.

Additionally, many speculate that the Worldwide Invitational's June 28 and 29 dates, which coincide with Diablo II's June 29, 2000 release date, lend further credence to rumors of a Diablo III announcement after the event.

One way or the other, expect Blizzard to clear the air this weekend.

Epic Update!!! [01/07/08]

Everything we know so far...

1. General Overview

* Largely follows in the style of past Diablo games.
* Controls and camera kept simple, but depth of combat enhanced.
* The story takes place 20 years after the events of Diablo II.
* Greater emphasis has been placed on a character-driven story.
* Targeting a length similar to Diablo II, which ran four acts.
* Uses a new in-house 3D engine and the Havok physics engine.
* Has been in development for four or five years. Was rebooted after Blizzard North shut down in March 2005.
* The game is "really far along," and is "really fun to play already." (Source: GameSpot)
* Dev team now up to 50-55 employees.
* Will ship simultaneously on Mac and PC.
* No plans for a console version.
* No decisions made on financial model.
* Blizzard challenged themselves to add color to the art style while maintaining the dark, gothic feel of the previous titles.

2. Gameplay

* Heavy focus on encouraging cooperative play.
* Higher difficulty levels.
* Mixes randomized and static maps as in Diablo II.
* Hardcore mode likely to return. "Don't see why we wouldn't do it."
* Less focus on potions in order to emphasize skill use. Monsters can drop instant health regen orbs which heal anybody nearby in your party.
* Trading will be improved over the ad-hoc Diablo II experience, but nothing like an "auction house" system has been confirmed.
* Much more vertical terrain. Bridges, ladders, etc.
* Destructible environments, that can also hurt enemies via Havok physics engine.
* Town portal system will "probably" be changed to speed up gameplay.
* Mounts not seen as necessary.
* Booby traps return.
* Helper/bodyguard NPCs are back.

3. Questing

* There will be class-based quests in addition to main storyline quests.
* A new "Adventure" system will power randomly generated scripted events. An example provided was an area the player would come across, such as an old abandoned house, that may have a story behind it and enemies to dispatch.
* A new conversation system will see fully-voiced characters interacting with each other.
* Loot is now generated per player. You only see the loot that you can pick up, which Blizzard hopes will create a spirit of cooperation.
* Color-coded items, uniques, runes, and other conventions return, in addition to identifying scrolls.

4. Interface

* The user interface has been kept very similar to Diablo II.
* The new hotbar acts like an abbreviated four-slot form of a World of Warcraft hotbar, with additional slots for scrolls.
* Players will be able to quickswap between skills using the mouse wheel or tab key.
* Isometric view that can be zoomed in, but not zoomed far out.
* Item slots: helm, shoulders, gloves, body, pants, boots, belt, two rings, amulet.
* Damage-per-second variable on items.
* Items all take up one inventory slot--no more shuffling that giant spear around.
* Hit point numbers now appear above monsters after critical hits.
* Buffs are now displayed as an icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.
* Gold is now automatically picked up.

5. Multiplayer

* Drop in/drop out cooperative play over Battle.net.
* There will be a single realm/region for North America.
* The game can support about eight players in multiplayer, but currently plays better with around five. The maximum has not yet been decided upon.
* Battle.net will receive new upgrades, some of which will be seen in StarCraft II.
* Blizzard is looking at Battle.net features that will increase player accountability in order to cut down on annoying jerks.
* Blizzard is looking at integrating web community features, such as a WoW Armory-like website that would allow players to show off their characters outside of the game.

6. Classes

* Five total character classes.
* Players will be able to choose a male or female variant of each class.
* Confirmed classes:

Witch Doctor
o Hails from the Teganze, an area of the Torajan jungles.
o A self-sacrificing people that believe in an alternate reality called the Unformed Land, which the Witch Doctors are able to tap into for their powers.
o Similar to Necromancer in function, but not necessarily intended as a replacement.
o Confirmed abilities:
+ Firebomb: grenade-like AoE (Area of Effect) fire spell.
+ Horrify: AoE fear spell, causes most creatures to run away)
+ Locust Swarm: summons a swarm of insects that literally devour clusters of enemies, leaving nothing but bones.
+ Mongrel: summons a demon dog from a skeleton. Casting locust swarm on a mongrel adds disease damage to its attacks. Intentionally destroying the mongrel damages nearby enemies.
+ Mass Confusion: temporarily turns a group of enemies against each other.
+ Soul Harvest: AoE spell that kills an enemy and converts it into mana.
+ Wall of Zombies: firewall-like spell that summons a line of zombies which stand and swing at nearby enemies.

Barbarian
o The Mount Arreat area, home of the barbarians, was devastated in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. The barbarian people have subsequently fallen into decline.
o Some barbarians have been turned into inhuman beasts.
o Confirmed abilities:
+ Cleave: hits multiple enemies in one swing.
+ Ground Stomp: a thundering AoE stun.
+ Leap: precision jump that destroys enemies on landing.
+ Seismic Slam: the Barbarian slams the ground, creating a directed shockwave that can hit multiple enemies in a line.
+ Whirlwind: a reckless spinning attack that takes out any enemy in the Barbarian's path.

Other classes are still not fully decided upon by Blizzard, but obvious choices for launch or expansion are some kind of Archer and Sorceror.

7. Monsters

* Skeletons
o Will come in standard soldier form, as summoners, or as shield bearers.
o Shield bearers are slow but tough, and will absorb damage until their shield breaks, protecting casters behind them.
o Skeletons be summoned by necromancers anywhere, but will require less effort to summon in a graveyard than in the middle of a forest.
o Necromancers can summon a horde of skeletons or one single uber-skeleton for the same cost.
o Summoners will automatically replenish skeleton warriors for a necromancer, creating a self-sustaining army.
* Berserker
o Aggressive monster with a mace that charges up its attacks, becoming vulnerable if it misses.
* Khazra (goat-men)
o Similar to the goat-men in past games.

o Moon Clan Charger variant wields a large axe.
* Dark Cultists
o Weak magicians, they summon demon spawn to fight against you.
o The Dark Vessel variant transforms into powerful entities on a timer. The player must kill them before they morph or face a tough battle.
* Ghouls
o Standard ghost-like wraiths. Shown in the gameplay video leaping out from a trap.
* Grotesque
o A fat zombie. When killed, dozens of blue eels swim free of its stomach and swarm the player.
* Beast
o A large wooly beast with horns. Seems to have a charge and slam ability.
* Thousand Pounder
o A mini-boss demon shown in the Forgotten Tombs dungeon. It wields two giant maces.
* Gnarled Walkers
o Entities from another dimension that disguise themselves as massive trees, picking off men and animals when they come near.
o Employ some kind of poison attack.
* Siegebreaker Assault Beast
o A very large mini-boss resembling a dog creature with a human torso attached to it. Shown at the end of the recent gameplay demonstration.
o Picked up a player and bit his head off in a scripted animation, finishing it off in one attack.

8. Story

* Player character now interacts with characters in dialogue scenes.
* Old characters like Deckard Cain return.
* Plot:
o It has been twenty years since the events of Diablo II. Of those who faced the Lords of Hatred, Terror, and Destruction in the battle over the fate of Sanctuary, there are few still living who can bear to remember the horrors that the Prime Evils wrought upon the world. And of those who did not witness the terrible events firsthand, most believe the stories to be little more than myth. But something evil is stirring once again in Tristram, and it may already have claimed its first victim: Deckard Cain.
(Source: Blizzard.com)

o "In the previous two games, Diablo and his two brothers, Mephisto and Baal, were the three Prime Evils of a world called Sanctuary. Where we start off in Diablo III, it's twenty years later and the brothers are gone, they've been vanquished. Essentially everyone was kind of geared for Hell to actually invade. At the end of Lord of Destruction, the Worldstone was destroyed, it left a giant crater and everyone was expecting the hordes to come pouring out of it and nothing happened. So, Deckard Cain is one of our main characters from the first two games, he's spent the last two decades trying to find out where the last two Evils are, what they're doing and why the invasion didn't happen. A lot of the rest of the story focuses on Tyrael, the Angel of Justice, and what's happened to him since that event as he was actually the angel who destroyed the world." (Source: Kotaku)

* World Locations:
o New Tristram
+ Town formed by merchants looking to make a profit off of the legends of riches found in the cathedral.
+ Fell into decrepitude after the cathedral was looted.
+ Now comprised of "depressing shacks" and the old inn.
+ Cain says that there is still value in the cathedral in the form of ancient tomes.
# Caldeum

* Located in Kehijstan.
* Rivals Diablo II's Kurast in size.
* Began to decay after Kurast's nobles fled their city and took up residence in Caldeum and brought with them a sense of entitlement.
* When the unifying Emperor of Kehjistan became ill and died, the Zakarum returned and the city fell into chaos.

# Confirmed Zone: Leoric Highlands
# Confirmed Dungeon: Forgotten Tombs

Update!!! [21/08/08]
GC 2008: Diablo III Progress ReportLead designer Jay Wilson fills us in on the new potion system, inventory, and story details.

While Diablo III wasn't on display at GC 2008, we got an opportunity to sit down with the action-RPG's lead designer, Jay Wilson, to get a sense of how things are coming along in the much-anticipated sequel. Since the game was recently announced in Paris at Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational event, a segment of the franchise's fan base has been upset about the art style, claiming it didn't stay true to the darker nature of the previous two games. Wilson disagrees.

"To be fair, it's a small minority that really don't like the art style," he said. "A majority of the feedback we've gotten has been overwhelmingly positive about the art style -- I think when they see the final game they'll find it's probably a bit darker than they might think. What we've shown is the earliest parts of the game meant to be a little sunnier and brighter than the later because we're trying to set a juxtaposition and make everything feel worse as the game move on. In terms of the actual art style, we went through three full art revisions where we essentially hit the reset button on all the art and started over again and one of the main reasons was when we tried to go towards what our memory of Diablo II was we found that it created a drab, boring game that didn't play very well."

"One of the things I try to remind ... people who talk about the art style and what Diablo II looked like, [is] they're being very selective in their memory. They're remembering small parts of Act I and small parts of Act III and conveniently forgetting all the green fields of Act I and all of Act II, which is actually one of the most popular Acts. The general kind of almost garish look of the monsters really made them stand out, and those things made the game play really well. They were actually criticized at the time. When Diablo II came out it was panned for being too bright and cheerful compared to the original Diablo. Of course the original Diablo drew like little red lines around the enemies so you could actually see them."

Blizzard wasn't making any sort of announcements for Diablo III. So far it's just the Barbarian and Witch Doctor classes that we know of, and we were told Blizzcon 2008 will be the place for another reveal. So we took the opportunity to ask Wilson about some of the design changes with Diablo III, particularly with the removal of potions and the slotted inventory system. Players of the first two games will remember how much combat revolved around having a sufficient supply of potions at the ready to refill health. Well, that's not how it's going to work in this game; there are no health potions to be purchased at vendors. Instead, groups of enemies will drop health orbs that instantly restore lost hit points and disappear if not collected within a set time. Wilson described why this decision was made.

"A lot of people, I think, would say that's a hallmark of the Diablo series, the potion system. We looked at it and said, 'No, that just makes the game worse,'" said Wilson. "It doesn't make it play like a better action game, it just kind of gives the player infinite health. It's actually a fairly poor recovery mechanic because it forces the designers to design monsters that have to deal with a player that has infinite health. The only thing you can do is have monsters that can overcome that health and essentially one-shot you. That's not a very interesting monster. It's actually a horrible monster. But that's the only option. The design shoehorned the designers into that kind of monster design. So we focused on a health system that actually forces the player to think tactically to recover health from monsters and to put them in some situations where they are low on health but have to walk into an enemy encounter anyway. That makes for a much more challenging encounter but it also makes for a situation where we can design the monsters to be a lot more interesting. We actually can lower damage on monsters. We want monsters to do less damage because we want them to wear you down over time and do things that are challenging in different ways."

Wilson was more positive about Diablo's treasure system. "It's perfect. You know, all we'll maybe do is tweak some little things that we don't like about it, some systems that we think were maybe a little broken. But for the most part, it works really well and we don't really want to change it, but the combat, oh, that could be so much better."

Going more in-depth on the subject, Wilson explained how the early parts of Diablo III would be similar to Diablo II. The new types of systems wouldn't be felt as much until after about 10 levels or so into the game where players will have a larger number of skills to use in dealing with groups of foes. "The goal is to have players use skills where previously they would have used a potion," said Wilson. "If I've got to deal with an enemy, I'm going to go in, stun a whole bunch of guys, and circumnavigate them to reach a health orb. Or I'm going to stun them and take out a bunch of guys with the hope that I'm going to get a health orb, and if I don't, I'll use some other kind of mechanic to deal with that threat."

With the inventory screen, players will no longer have to deal with items taking up multiple slots as in Diablo games past. Now, all items will just take up one slot, though exactly how that's going to be implemented is still being worked on. Wilson explained some of the issues being taken into consideration. "The one really great thing that most people wouldn't argue with was the grid-based system allowed for very large icons which made the items feel better. So one of the things we don't like about the current inventory is the icons are smaller than we'd like them to be, so we're working on sizing up the icons themselves to be very large, much larger than say World of Warcraft ... We've experimented with other things like having different bag types hold different kinds of items, like big items go into this bag and small items go into this bag, but we haven't really settled on anything like that. What we don't want is the grid-based Tetris sort of system."

A crafting system is also in the works, though it won't be anything like Diablo II's Horadric Cube combinations. "I don't know if I can think of a comparison," said Wilson. "I think that system is a pretty cool and different kind of system from anything that we've had before."

Since our time for the interview was limited, we shifted gears into what Diablo III's environments might be like over the course of the story. "I don't think we're going to have anything quite as out there as [Diablo II's] Arcane Sanctuary. I'd say the scale and scope of the game in terms of the threat you end up facing is much, much higher than the previous games. I think if you look at the cinematic trailer there's never really been an invasion of Sanctuary, and I think from the trailer it's obvious that's where we're headed. A lot of what happened in the original Diablo was very small in scope. Even in Diablo II you traveled all over the world, like you're really just facing the aftermath of Diablo walking through the world ... There was a bit of it with Lord of Destruction. Baal's invasion was sizable, but we really want to go more, higher than that. That's about as detailed as I can be without giving away key story elements."

Wilson went on to talk about how story would work when players join up to play co-operatively online. "Our leaning tends to be towards people playing together over always maintaining coherency of story. Because that's the big problem. If you join into my game and I'm three quests ahead of you, we don't want you to feel like 'Oh, I don't want to play with you because you're three quests ahead of me.' So what we try to do is lean more toward 'Okay, you can get done everything from this point on, and then you can come back in a previous game and finish these other things.' That's the one advantage the Diablo series has. People are used to returning to games to get things done, kind of like in an MMO where you return to a zone to finish that one quest that you couldn't do because your friend didn't have it ... We don't want you to lose anything by playing with someone else."

Diablo III doesn't have a release date at the moment, as Blizzard is saying it'll be done when it's done.

Keep an eye on this thread, which I will update with the latest news when it is released.

Diablo I and II might have been fun but nothing else to be honest. Diablo 3 might be fun too if it will ever get out. But Blizzard keeps denying its existence. Maybe they have to get the truth out this time.

It looks interesting, but its not promising in anyway, shape or form. I mean, the only reason people are speculating that its Diablo III is because of file names and the possibility that the picture is of a different colour worldstone.

I'll be excited, but not right now. I'm not banking on anything just yet.

Oh and just to throw this in there, do you ever think Blizzard might just be doing it for fun? To see what will be speculated and what wont?

Publicity is good for a major company, I would believe it if they did and after all, it has been done before to hype games majorly.

Sentence making no sense is a sentence that makes no sense.

I haven't played any of the Diablo series.

They have already announced Starcraft 2

They have already announced Wrath Of The Litch King

Logic tells me that Diablo being the only series left they haven't tampered with in a while that it is in fact Diablo 3.

Yeah, that's what is amazing about Diablo. It's got such good gameplay I couldn't care less about the graphics. The same with other classics like Half life.

Although saying that, it would be the icing on the cake ^^

This is part of an email I got from the "former" diablo3.com community I was part of :

This newsletter is to alert you of the latest happenings for the Diablo franchise. The first thing you must know if you haven't visited recently is that on May 1, Mockery announced that he had donated/given up the diablo3.com domain name to Blizzard Entertainment upon request. Diablo3.com Forum Community is now reachable at Diablofans.com -- Read the announcement by Mockery:http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7199

On June 17, Blizzard Entertainment released Diablo II patch 1.12a with a new ladder reset and a no-cd requirement to play.http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8446

On June 20, Diablo3.com stopped redirecting to Diablofans.com -- and registrar search engines officially reported Blizzard Entertainment as owner of the domain name.

On June 23, Blizzard released the first splash teaser and opened the Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals Shop showing Diablo in the logo:http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8609

On June 24, the second day splash teaser showed the Hel Rune from Diablo II and the Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals Shop revealed the new WWI logo with a red Diablo on the center.http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8623

On June 25, the third teaser showed the Akilae Tribe symbol from Starcraft 2 -- however, the ice seems to be melting down with intense heat. Is hell frozen and now Diablo is emerging to make a come back?

Guys...

It’s official! Okay, no it’s not. Blizzard has been teasing the gaming world with its evolving homepage ice picture, and after this latest update, the planets certainly appear to be aligning for the announcement of World of StarCraft, or whatever they decide to call the new Massively Multiplayer Online game set in the StarCraft universe.

The StarCraft MMO has been rumored for a long time. It was reported as a sure thing for a brief moment in time back in May 2007 that it would be unveiled in South Korea at a Blizzard event, but that didn’t happen. Now with the upcoming release of StarCraft 2, what better time to release the StarCraft MMO than when they already got StarCraft on the brain?

Back to the picture, however, we’ve pretty much all decided there was a face there. It was originally suspected to be a Diablo head, indicating Blizzard’s new game was Diablo 3. Now the face, with glowing blue energy eyeballs, most likely is the face of a Protoss.
