Headcrab with a top hat.
You're not supposed to make models with hammer :/

No offence to brainz but that wasn't particuarly helpful I don't think.. :-/

But anyway: You nomally create a prop in a different program, a modelling program, although I am a complete n00b at this.

Programs you could use include Blender (which is free) and other programs like that.

Hammer is just for placing everything in a map,

But also, if you created your "model" in hammer, why would you not want to just leave it in a map :-s

Hope some of that made sense..

As Brainz said "You're not supposed to make models with hammer :/"
That is correct. If you wanna make models, then you need to use a program for it.

Like one of the followings:
3ds studio max
Maya

Or others.. (Google them)

After that, you need to get a plug-in for the program you have found. The program should export it to a Half-Life 2 .smd file and then you can compile it using StudioMDL.

Well... i was thinking of a big prop. for example, what if i wanted a building i made in hammer a prop for several maps. i understand i could just group and copy but i with there was a way to just say 'save as prop' or something. or if i spent a lot of time miking a custom tree or rock? but if theres no way...

I have a girlfriend, lolwut?
Select all the brushes (Ctrl + click) then press Ctrl + T to tie it to a entitity. It will be defualted as func_detail. Then just copy and paste the func_detail between mapss.

Art is Hard
You could also create a prefab. Just remember the dimensions.

Art is Hard
There's a button on the right side of hammer with a button that says "Create Prefab". Select whatever brushes you want to be kept together in the prefab, then hit that button. A save menu will come up, name it, and save. To load the prefab again: select the brush button, and right above "Create Prefab" there are two pull down menus. Select "Prefabs" under "Categories" and whatever you saved your prefab as under "Objects".

When you go to create a brush, it will appear as a box, and when you hit enter it will come out as your prefab.

Happily Engaged :D
If really interested in making it an actual model/prop then you can take just the objects you want to be them, paste them in a blank grid, then export the dxw or dxf file, can't remember what it is exactly. But that file can then be opened in a modelling problem, flip all the faces, texture and save as a prop. Bit of work but thats how you can keep it the exact same size.
