Listen to pip. Seriously, use that tutorial. I'm not kidding, click it now. Do it! And don't use Fraps or any of those other real-time encoders. The whole point of recording a demo is to give you time to encode video. It takes a while, you know. As far as editors go, Sony Vegas is (probably) the best for Windows. Its price isn't too bad either, at $60 USD. Of course, if you have a Mac, you have some good options, too. And Linux has Cinelerra.

A registered version of fraps is the best way to record streight away and easily. Source recorder is good, but must be used in conjunction with something else to actually make the .dem into a video file.

If you use the source recorder, then you can go back, record it off the demo and make it way better as you will not have lag and you can make it nicer.
