Most of the time with metal I recycle textures I find in the TF2 materials GCF. All you really need is some basic recolor skills and the ability to mirror an image sort of (like copy and paste it around so you can make it larger). I can't tell you more, it'd be giving away my trade secrets (and in all honesty, I did that kind of groundwork so long ago I hardly remember what exactly I did anyway). I will say this though: invest in a good camera and go texture hunting. It might not be useful for TF2 since real-life cartoony textures are hard to come by, but it's just good to have a library of your own textures to use if you need to. that's what I've done and it's worked out pretty well so far. of course ideally I'd be able to make my own from scratch...haven't quite gotten to that point yet ;)
