Yes, and that also increases the FSB. Here's something interesting: My old system with an Athlon 64 3200 and a 7800 GT ran CS:S as well as systems with last-gen hardware. Why? Because AMD's HyperTransport thingy gave me a 2 GHz FSB.

Source is event-driven. It polls hardware and RAM for changes, and reacts accordingly. It's the ability to read those things quickly that will give you better performance.
