You had a few too many past tenses in your sentence.

*² The sentence above, which was quoting and correcting another sentence has, in fact, been, quoted and grammatically corrected.
*¹ "I think you meant to say" would be proper grammar, however, it doesn't sound very friendly, even though you are correcting the grammar of his sentence you should still be friendly.
