The Matrix v1.1 for CS:S
by MoonQuake
******************************
--READ ALL PLEASE--

IMPORTANT FOR ADMINS: The Matrix map is big! If you want people to be able to download the map directly from your server, you must use this command:

net_maxfilesize 27

Default 16mb. The Matrix map is 25mb.

Without this command changed to 27, people will download all the resources EXCEPT the .BSP and they will get an error message like "de_thematrix_11.bsp not found".
-->If your server BZIPs the maps you're ok, but make sure you test it first.

---------------------------------
Changelog for the Matrix 1.1:
---------------------------------

-Visual improvements in the Lobby, Dojo sidehall and backhall, Elevator, Office corridor and Rooftops.

-Improved .NAV system for bots. They're bad asses now, even level 1 bots! They throw grenades when they should and the correct type, and they plant on both bombsites evenly. They use the teleporters efficiently.

-Fixed issue with people getting stuck out of the elevator: they're teleported in the white room if stuck outside.

-Slight performance improvements in some rooms.

-Improved Dojo and Office destruction FX.

-Enlarged some doorways for easier access.

-The lighting with flashlight and cubemaps problems were automatically fixed by the 9/23 update.

-Other minor fixes

--------------------------------------------
Major known issues with the Matrix 1.1:
--------------------------------------------

-The elevator is still shaky. Elevators aren't working perfectly online because they bump into players and players bump into each other so sometimes you feel like everything's shaking. This will never be better until it is improved by Valve.

-The elevator might be missing when you start a new round but short after, the doors shut and you can't see the problem anymore. This is a bug related to timers and outputs for certain objects. The timers don't reset between rounds in CS:S for unknown magical reasons. The problem was reported to Valve and the future will tell us if it will be fixed or not.

-Limited bot support: they get stuck sometimes but everything is fine other than that. They are smart-asses that hide in ducts, use teleporters and use the elevator efficiently. They just get stuck from time to time.

-DirectX 8 mode: The map seems to present minor texture bugs when run in directx 8 mode. Nothing important, things like grainy white texture in the white room or some textures are super shiny when they're not shiny in dx9 mode. There seem to be issues with swap buffers also when details are set too high in dx 8 mode.

-DirectX 7 mode: the matrix zone hack texture (the weird liquidish one) shows up as plain white or plain green in Dx7 mode. Also, the same problems found when run in DX8 mode are here too. Grainy textures. But no reflection problems since there are no such things in DX7 mode.

-----------------------------------
MAP INFORMATION FOR GEEKS:
-----------------------------------

-This map took me 4 months to improve, from beta 1 to beta 3, and to this version 1.1. (Hopefully the last one)

-Total build time in Hammer: 1h 59 min.

-This map has 3819 light sources!

-This map has 1 easter egg, 1 hidden signature and 1 hidden message.

-Total players dead from failing the roof jump during testing: around 50

-% of players who made the jump the first time during testing: around 10% (excluding me, lol!)

SPECIAL THANKS:
--------------------

-To my lovely girlfriend who supported me and has a lot of patience. :) xx
-To Zack who contacted me first, got interested in my project and made the Matrix Guide, and all the folks over at Wastelandsgaming.com who helped me beta test the map. <3
-To Pepsi Cola
-To Budweiser and Stella Artois Beers (and others I remember vaguely)
-To Spicy Tostitos corn chips
-To Zesty Lime Tostitos corn chips

No problem! know what you mean when you say its big! takes a few games to learn your way round. shame theres not going to be any more css maps :(
anyway... im abit of a noob to css and i wana have a go at making a map some time but hammer seems to stop responding whenever i try to do game configuration.
if i ever do get a map made ill let you know, doubt it will be quite as good as this though!

Thanks for the detailed feedback, Taffy!

I'm glad you like the attention to details I've put in the map.
The rooftop section is one I made up myself, I needed an extra section that would link the old appartments and Neo's work building, sorta like a short cut path. (the "Everyone fails the first time" jump)

There used to be a section from the third movie where Neo fights Smith, under the rain, but I had to cut it... there so much an engine can handle! I didn't want the map to be too big (it already is), so I couldn't add any more places from the movies. Also, I didn't want to add locations just for the fun of it, this would've mixed up people and add to the map's massive weight.

About the minimap icons, well, it wasn't a problem until Valve added the minimap itself! :) It automatically shows where the bomb sites are, problem is, I used "fake" bomb sites for AI bots to use the phone booths for teleportation. It was the only way to drag them towards them! :)

There won't be any other CSS map from me, since I'm also working on a TF2 map that will be released soon, and will surely please, amongst others, the Spy that's on your avatar!

Stay tuned.

Pros - lots of detail! phone/teleports (love 'em!). changes slightly each rounds (doors get bricked in like in first film dejavu). stairway and bathroom look alot like the film! matrix writing on floor at bomb sites. flickering at start of round like your being loaded into the matrix!

cons - not really a con but where in the film is the roof part of the map? on the minimap are the bomb plant letters in right place? they seem to just lead me to phone boothes...

improvements - none really but if you ever do decide to improve, have more iconic scenes like the train station from first film and corridor where Neo runs into smith and makes him explode (that could also double as opening scene with trinity and Neo's apartment)! also instead of having holes in the sides of the white corridor make it so you go through the green doors (will you find the right one?)! and fix minimap letters.

notes - great work! love it! a must for matrix fans everywhere! can tell you did your research and put alot of effort in so good job and keep the maps coming! (sorry its abit long lol). maybe make a Matrix: Reloaded one next with carpark, atrium, freeway and sewers etc.?

again great work!!!

Bsp version 20.expected 19.Can you help me?

Clusher: try to delete the .BSP file of the map then rejoin the server.
Also, make sure the server is running the original version 1.1 from the package you can download here. If your version and the server version aren't the same, you'll get that error message.

snickun:Yep, make sure you install the .nav file properly. It should be in the same folder than the map itself (the .BSP) (Unpacking the whole ZIP package at the right place should do the trick anyways.)

Have fun!

I am happy to see map based over the film "Enter the Matrix", I would dearly love to review//assess this map but sadly I can not. I am in astonishment because of the maps such beautiful design, but the roof part can be a little difficult when playing but the rest for sure is really, really lovely.

Hopefully if you give me any other links to your astonishing maps, I would be obliged to give you a friendly, professional review/assessment.
