V2 is out

Pros: Overall this is not a bad map. Its winter which I think is done well. The snowing is a nice effect too. The igloos are a cool idea. I also noticed a wind sound in there. I like the tower and the built up snow on the inside.


Cons: This is just another hosites map. Something everyone has seen 100 times or more. Everything is there but nothing is new. In addition some things that are there are not done all that great. The igloos themselves were a good idea. But the brush work that went into to them to create them was rather poor. They are blocky and have sharp angles coming off of them. In addition you didnt bother to clip the wall inside of the jail to fit into the inside of the igloo, so you have the part of the wall sticking out on the outside which also makes them very ugly. On the entire map the brushwork is rather shoty. The displacements are good other than the very sharp angles you have on them at some points which can make them very not realistic. The lighting on the map is ok, the dullness adds to the winter feel. The only problem with that is that since the map is rather plain, the dullness makes everything more dull. The mini-game areas are there kinda, but the shot for shot is rather lacking in creativity. Just two squares on the ground? The skybox is also very plain, I like the 2d trees surrounding the area however, in this situation you have a great opportunity to use a 3d skybox to heighten the environment of your map, in addition to adding to the aesthetics. The rebel route is interesting to say the least but whats up with the bright pink box to set off the wall?


Improvements: Add some more room for a new mini-game or at least get creative with the ones you have. For instance, the shot for shot. It would prolly be 10x more interesting if you moved the shot for shot onto the first and last igloo cell. Put a ladder or ramp to get up there and it would prolly be a lot more fun than it is now. Or even putting it on two overturned trucks to incorporate then environment. As for no knife arena, I think that is perfectly ok, people hardly use the knife arenas anyway.


Notes: Overall, some things to think about before making a hosties map. One would be, why would anyone play this map over another map? There are a lot of hosties maps just like this one. Whats different about this map that is going to have people playing it? Why play this map over say, Antartica? This map is alright in terms of hosties maps, but is what you are striving for just alright, or great? I think with a little more effort this could be great.
