YES I GET IT NOW. I was just proving a point to xtreme.

I understood what it meant after Clownfart and Crazy's post.

Yes, as indeed I read cpu instead of gpu.
My fault guys :O.

I don't know what you really mean, Hitman. Everybody around here said pretty much everything. Removing bottlenecks, saving you $$$ by making it run as fast as more expensive hardware does that's it. If you don't want to get extra fps from games or make dvd-burning/video encoding run in a shorter time then don't overclock.

Xtreme, uh in my first post I said I did understand the logic in overclocking a graphics card, but I didn't quite understand the logic of oc'ing a cpu.

See that's what I was wondering when I made the post about what does it do.

I was thinking, ok performance, getting more out of my system, so what does that translate to everyday use. -That sort of thing.

In terms of everyday use, not much. For everyday use you can get away with something like an E2180 running at stock speeds. If you want to game though you would be better server by overclocking it to ~3GHz, or better yet getting an E4600 or an E7200 and overclocking them since the extra cache will be a noticeable help in game.

He's talking about GPU's pipp :)...
Whatever...

So basically it's bragging rights, not bottlenecking your gpu, and some applications will run better/faster.

Ok, thanks guys.

It's also just about getting more out of your computer without spending more, for instance buying a less expensive processor and overclocking it to get the performance you would get out of a much more expensive processor.

A basic reason to overclock your cpu is to avoid bottlenecking the gpu. You also gain performance in things which are held back by the processor normally such as compiling maps.

A 50Mhz overclock won't help you to do that though...

I didn't see anyone saying "what good does a 50MHz overclock do?" I saw someone ask what do you gain from overclocking your processor. If you can only get an extra 50MHz out of your processor you're doing something wrong.
